So, I just picked up an SG Special T Humbucker. I just couldn't take the cream plastic on it. I had a little time today and decided to make a black pickguard for it, change the rings, and do a set up. What a great guitar this is. This one will stay around for a while... here's a before and after...
It is by far a better looking guitar due to those changes. Just switch out the pickup selector switch knob to black and it will be 100% nice.
Where did you find that right angle jack plug? I haven't seen one like that since the 1960s! And yes, the black is a huge improvement.
After reading the opening paragraph, I expected to have a preference, but I have to say, it is tough for me to decide if I like one better than the other. I like the one I am looking at best, and could never think of changing it... until I look at the other one, and then that becomes my "favorite". The difference it makes is pretty amazing going either way, but I think I would just have to buy an identical guitar so I could have it both ways at the same time! Your thread title says it all! It's like two completely different guitars.
Thanks NMA. That's on the list. I was out of USA switch tips I only had a couple of import ones. They aren't shaped quite right..
Thanks Donepearce, I've been a repair gut for thirty years, and it's probably that old! I have a couple that I made some cables out of for my SG's..
I know exactly what you mean, GNG. Actually, I guess it's just because I'm an old school kind of guy. Hell, I'm just old! But, I like the more traditional look of the black plastic. I'm sure there are plenty that like the cream also...
I really like those block inlays. Very 70s. Me, I'd definitely dress one of these guitars all 70s style.
Google "Pancake jack" - there are plenty including Switchcraft 228. Don't see them on ready made leads though, except for short ones for pedalboards. I'm tempted to dust off my soldering skills as I'm notoriously clumsy and even the modern right-angle plugs stand proud from the SG's face and present more of a target than I'm comfortable with sometimes. OTOH, I'd have to be sure that the screws holding the two halves of the case together didn't protrude enough to scratch the finish
Very nice sir, looks sharp. I like the upgrades personally, although she was a pretty axe from the get go. can I ask you, how do you like you peavey Classic 30?
I really like the black plastic. Looks much better, IMO! I did the same thing to one of my Strats. Before: After:
