Came across this on eBay today. Seller calls it a standard in his description but no inlays so not a standard. Is this a SG special?

    Yes. It's a Special.

The rule for Gibsons are: if it's got dots, it's a special, block inlays then it's a standard.

Well, I think that's how it goes...

Looks like an SG Special with a crappy refin, to me. I can't see a ser#under the finish, so I'd be taking his word for the date of manufacture.

It looks more like Corona Yellow ... possible someone converted a SG Junior or SG-X ... although my TV Yellow one looked a bit like that in seller's photos because he used too much flash

There were 2001 TV Yellows, most of them I've seen are Standards. Do more digging!

That doesn't look like TV Yellow to me. Also doesn't look like a refin. It looks more like a creme Special that has aged to banana quite a bit more on the front than the back.

    Less...

Looks legit, but could definetely be a refinish. At the very least, the pickguard is aftermarket.

Yes, I think a white pickguard is definitely aftermarket.

I sometimes want a single-ply white pickguard for mine though. Looks good.

Gibson really put that "Caterpillar" tractor paint on a guitar, in 2001? Oh well, at that starter price, you could afford to do a proper job of stripping and decide what colour you'd like. Ebony fingerboard's ok, but a little salt stained.

Hammer, that wall the guitar is hanging on looks exactly like my house...... You're not visiting while I'm on the river are you?!

I like yellow, TV, Banana, whatever you wanna call any shade, I'm a fan. My tool box is yellow. But that SG, not for me!

That is usually true, but not always. My '74 SG is a Special, yet has small block inlays. Some years in the '70s had small block inlays on the Specials.

So, there may be a few Specials with block inlays, but, to my knowledge, there are no Standards with dots.

There is no law against doing this to your SG.

There ought to be, but there isn't.
BTW-If by some chance the person who currently owns this one is viewing, you should pm me. I have an interesting offer to make.

I like the guitar myself I'd put the Black guard back on though. That ebony fretboard is real nice. Looks like it's in pretty good shape too.

I still say it's a refin, maybe hiding something and hadn't Gibson been putting Nashville bridges on SG for awhile, by 2001?

Very possible. I refuse to speculate on those pics though..
I think they went to the Nashville bridges in '02 or '03..

Could possibly have post conversions and an ABR style bridge was installed. Regardless it is a nice guitar if you like that color

I've seen an SG very much like this one, in a video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PqHFlHUlkc

Pickguard, bridge, and colour very similar, but different pickups. I wonder if it is the same one and the seller has removed the pickups to sell it. Also, I still think this looks more like the Corona Yellow that came on SG-Xs and some other models.
