So, what's the definitive track to listen to for the famous Tone Bender (Vox? Sola?) sound? And, has anyone tried any of the various 'boutique' version? I'm interested in the D*A*M ones from England.
Hi Bscepter-For Me, the definitive track(s) for the sola sound tonebender, would be
1. Anything on Led Zepp 1- Page used it and a Tele thru a Supro amp. ALL OVER THIS ALBUM, as well as Zepp 2.
2. Jeff Beck- Beck's Bolero as well as any of the Yardbirds stuff with Jeff Beck, "Over Under Sideways own from the "Roger the Engineer" album.
I built one because the origs. are too pricey and scarce. Cost about 50.00US from beg. to end. Sounded FANTASTIC! loves single coils and P90s Gets a little muddy with Humbuckers, but still good. What a great pedal and an easy build too!
If can find the link for the scematic/layout, I'll post it. it's real easy! (hell, I did it!) I plug in this box at practice, and my bass player, who's a total gear snob, dropped his jaw to the floor and yelled " Holy Sh*t, do Dazed and Confused!" If yer gonna build one, there are two versions, do the two knobber as opposed to the three knobber, that one's the real deal! I know this cause during my research, I was e-mailing a guy at an English Music store, he said he'd find out for sure, He sez J. Page lives around tyhe corner from his shop, so he went round his house and flat out asked him!!!!! Page confirmed it was a 2-knobber! As much as we can trust Page, He seems to forget things from interview to interview!
Oh well, It's all we got! I betcha John Paul Jones probably has a better memory at this point!
Here's two and there both the same cept the Bottom one has the Sola sound thingy blacked out and Vox written in... insides are the same. They like Tele's as they don't push them as hard as buckers, and being thick and fat, the buchers tend to loose the clear, tight quality as one riffs down the neck becoming too muddy.....

you think JP doesn't have 12 ft high walls, armed guards, security cameras, and killer dobermans and whatnot to keep goofs from walking up to his door to ask him about pedals?
I've got the D*A*M MkII fuzz, it's pretty hot! Just take a look at the guts, see the NOS loveliness:
Just the fact alone that he posts a photo like this on his website for all to copy (....yeah, just as he did at one time, but correctly mind you O0) makes the guy a cool dude.
The build, finish, and best of all, tone of his MKII is extraordinary.
Highly recommended!
Uooooh .... Mine has the metal can MULLARD OC 71's ...... posted somewhere close around here! REALLY LIKE THE ELECTRO'S HE USES TOO ..... And the Mullard C-296 mustard caps sound superb! Sounds like a salad here... :funny: Sola sound is under the black stripe and is easy to see too! ;D
