Fun day, new to me Special. My first guitar with mini humbuckers. Can’t wait to get home and crank it.(I’m on the road for work right now and came across this deal).

Those mini-humbuckers sound great !

By adding an HP-II PCB, having one or both in tap or split mode opens a whole new dimension in functionality.

Although I have yet to have anyone reiterate the mini-humbuckers' extended sound capabilities by coil switching.

I really like my SG special with mini hums.

Mine sounds excellent through the Orange Micro Terror shown here,
and also through the Black Heart Little Giant, which isn't as loud but
sounds very cool.

She plays well with pedals, and I like the balance between the
neck p'up and the bridge. I would never mangle mine with single
coil options, because of the range of tones available with the minis.
An excellent acquisition IMHO, congrats.

I like the look of mini humbuckers, but I've never played a set. I'm interested to know how they play for you.

I first found out about mini hums when researching the historical path the LP took. Having found out way back when I was googling to find out the year my first LP was made, I found out GIB discontinued the LP and then installed mini hums when production resumed with the 60's Deluxe's

If you're interested, do a search, in quotations, for -

World leader in electric guitar parts.

I don't want to post their name, I'm in no way connected with them.

Somehow they part-out really nice current model guitars, you'll see.

Seems like I bought all the electronics & pickups from an SG HP-II in one fell swoop.

I ended up upgrading 2 guitars with the parts, an SGJ and the std. SG HP with its mortised control cavity cover pictured above.

Nice.
So, I'm home and I've been playing my new SG and I'm a not digging these pickups. I can't get them to balance and be anywhere near the same volume as each other, one is super close and the other is far from the strings and everything in-between. Also, they are incredibly warm and will never stand out in the mix, tone knobs on 10 and these things sound like they should be on a bass.
Is this what Minis are like?

Colnago, that is what almost all SG pups will be like balance wise. Bridge up close to strings and neck almost buried in the body to balance the outputs.

Take your back control cover off and see what your Pot values are. 500K is preferred for Humbuckers, Sometimes Gibson puts 250 or 300 K ohm ones in but to me those are best for singles like in a Strat
