I bet the Valve Jr can be made to sound pretty good, but you might also consider Marshall Valvestate. They sound alot like an all tube Marshall amp, but have a solid state power section, which should remain nice and tight even when cranked, yet still have some tube feel to it. I just saw 15 and 20watt versions on ebay for cheap money. You could always upgrade speakers later on.

You should have seen this Marshall mini stack I saw the other week, had a valve jr or special whatever 5watt tube head on top, and the little Marshall 10" speak cabs on the bottom! Looked awesome!

If you have a real AC30 well then you know ..... If not then you'd think this isn it! But it's a kitchen appliance, you see ... like ya toaster or dishwasher, if you catch my drift!

Now the amp sounds good[sic] if your not a JMI AC30 man which no copy comes close to ... and at the fear of sounding 1Wank of reality the hand wired clones I have give the CC a goiod run for it's money but none are a hair on the arse of a real, restored, critically biased with tubes critically matched to the output tranformer JMI AC30!

I know this is a late entry, but so far it's only $102.50 on a NEW 20watt Marshall AVT from authorized Marshall dealer on ebay...

Now Voxy, to the best of my knowledge, so far he's opting for a 99 dolar Epi Valve Jr with no speaker, no cab simulated DI out, and so I figured that for about the same price, he can get a speaker and some output and input options. I've tried a 30 or 50 and at low volume levels it sounds pretty good. Nice little practice amp, whichever model version it was, they keep changing them every other year or so...

solid state guitar amps will never get another dime of my money nor recommendation from me!

i still like my vox because of versatility of course, but that lil dump amp i have has changed my thinking. it's so much more touch sensitive and musical sounding to my ears that i can't in good conscience recommend ss over all tube ever again.

and that's all i have to say about that........solid state is as solid state does!!! ;D ;D ;D

How much do you want to spend? I think that the Tech21 stuff is *really* nice sounding at a nice price. I'm not sure it does Epi Valve Jr., but you can get nice Marshall, Fender, and Mesa style tones out of the Trademark series.
