i absolutely love this amp but it's got a very bitey tone that i dont think my parents will be too keen on, what knobs do i have to twiddle to make it produce a warmer tone for when the folks are around?

The volume knob...turn it down to 3 and adjust the attenuator on the back for low volume. ;)

    Sorry Chuck,

    I couldn't help myself.
I achieved a smoother sound by doing 2 things.

    1. Replace the 12AX7 with a Tung-Sol tube
    2. Replace the speaker with a Tube 10

I got smoother and creamier sound without the bite in the distortion from the tube and a better low end response with the speaker

I did the same as Spunky-san. Makes all the difference in the world.

speaker is a breeze. the tube however, is a tight fit.
be careful and take yer time and you'll be fine.

hmm i wasnt planning on having to upgrade/change parts of the amp, i was hopeing that thier would be a setting that didnt have any sort of distortion, i didnt get to play with it very long in the shop but i couldnt seem to get a properly clean sound out of it.

have you tried the boutique clean model? I don't know about the Vox 30, but on the Vox 50 I had, it seemed to have alot of headroom . . . though you could dirty it up a bit if you cranked everything

It's easy to get a clean sound out of one.
