Hey people I was having a conversation with someone between hanging a guitar or put it back to case. He has his SG in case because he thinks that hangers harm the guitar , so he made my mind go crazy. My first guitar is wall hung on a Hercules wall hang. I love my new SG and I’d like to ask you if my Hercules wall hang or hanging a guitar in general will damage my guitar. I thought hanging a guitar is good because of the gravity. (Am I wrong ?) Should I hang it or leave it inside the case ?

Wall hangers can damage your guitar unless they are specified for use with a Nitro finish. But generally a wall hanger will keep your guitar in better shape than a case, and you will definitely play it more.

That is one of the drawbacks to human language.

As Don said, the only real question is whether the material the hanger is made of will react with the Nitro finish. (And the security of the wall fitting!)

Any recent Hercules hanger should be nitro safe. Another way of looking at it is this: If you find a slight discolouration on the back of the neck in ten years time, will this be an insignificant cost for the pleasure you've had in seeing your guitar each and every day, or will it be the worst thing that ever happened to you? If the latter, better keep it in the case!

Nah, most of mine are hanging at the moment for easy access, but otherwise they're in the case. I have heard about some hangers marring the nitro, but have not personally experienced it.

I had half a dozen of my guitars hanging in the music room. I had three guitars hanging on a stand for fifteen years. Other than dust settling in the nooks and crannies of the bridges, absolutely no harm came to any of the guitars.

I do keep them all in cases now. The changes in humidity does affect the action on some guitars, so they are all best kept in their cases.

The various brands of wall hangers are safe and I did find a cool set that hangs the guitar as though it were being played:

I take no chances with my hangers. I have made covers from towelling that are a good tight fit on the hook parts

Case ? What's that. If I use a case it is either for carrying the guitar to somewhere else or to hand it out to the buyer if I sold it with a case. If I kept my guitars in cases, I wouldn't play them. If I didn't play them, i'd sell them and be sad. Like this, they're in my face and get played all the time.

Home made hangers out of cut pieces from broken windsurfing $600 carbon booms. Nothing but the best.

Won’t a wall hanger put stress on the heel?

It's glued ... solid. Nothing's moving. Wood fibres are not extending. Your Gibson won't end up with a Fender scale. Ask these guys.

No. It relieves part of the heel stress imparted by string tension.

Plant them six inches deep in a mixture of sandy soil and compost and in the spring you will be able to harvest a whole load of ukeleles...

When or if I win the lottery...

My take? Constant temperature and moderate (50 to 60%?) relative humidity. Not too dry or the wood will dry out and crack, not too damp or they'll get soggy and things might to rot or rust.

Here in Houston I reckon that translates to inside the house, a wardrobe or closet should be fine, but not the attic or garage.

I wouldn't worry too much about the details of the hooks provided they've got some sort of foam padding.

As for cases or hooks, all the interviews I've seen with renowned guitarists (Gilmore, Summers, Clapton, Petty, etc.) they've had theirs on hooks.

Your results may vary of course.

Mine are all cased until I pull one out to play it. Why? Because after decades of keeping them on stands or hanging on walls I got sick of the dust collecting on them and they reacted more to environmental changes. Also, I live a block from the ocean and the strings would go bad faster from the salt air. Those are the only reasons though - they are perfectly safe hanging as long as the hanger is properly anchored in the wall.

Yeah ocean mist is a killer for metal. For that, I guess you only play western and sweet balades ?

For me, if it's in the case, I am either going to a gig, or selling it.

Gibsons go back in the case. Fenders stay out on a stand.
