What pickups do you love most, that work the best in your SG for you? i’m trying to see what people like the most, I was thinking most likely 57 classics for me they seem to be a popular choice.

And how many tries did it take to get you there?

my SGs all have the original pickups that came with them... tarbacks and '57 classics...
another has EMGs in them cos it didn't come fully original and had some dimarzio in them.

'57 Classic and classic plus for my favorite SG...
Nothin's too good for my Luna. Personally I think SGs and
'57 classics are made for each other...

For years and years, Gibson's standard premium pickup set was
490R and 498T. They installed those in SG Standards and Les Paul Standards
for a lot of years. That set was the STANDARD...
So there are thousands of them out there rocking and rolling.

My second favorite SG sports a pair of Gibson Mini Humbuckers. I like these
pickups a lot, and the guitar that holds them. Those were a new innovation in
2012 when my Silverburst SG was built. But they've since become standard
in SG Specials made in the teens. There was plenty of sneering when these
were new... people complained that they didn't sound like the old Epi ones.

I didn't care. I never listened to the old ones closely, and that was so long ago
that: whatever the old ones sounded like, it was different guitars, different strings,
different cables, different amps etc etc. I found that when played through my amp
and pedals, I got great sound out of my SG with Mini Hums. And that's what I want.

On this site you'll be directed to a lot of aftermarket pickups. Seymour Duncan's,
Lollars, Rio Grande, Bare Knuckles, ...they're all excellent.

And then there's P-90s... To me, these pickups are amazing. Invented in 1945,
they've really never been out of production. Ye SG with ye P-90s is one of the
classic tones. Play any kind of music with them, except maybe high gain.

Because then there's high gain... lots of choices there too, which I know nothing
about, but others on this forum do. Enjoy the fun.

Anything that doesn't prevent me from dialing in the right sound on my amp and stomp boxes will do.

I have the original 57 Classics in my 2014 SG Original 2.

I have the original mini-humbuckers in my 1974 SG Special.

For what it’s worth, my 2007 Les Paul Custom has the original 498T/490R combo.

For my purposes, I find that the original pickups that Gibson put in my guitars work just fine and don’t require any replacement.

As I have never been comfortable with the stock 57's, so I've been mixing and matching for years and have been chasing pickups for way too long. This line up is about 4 or more years old, and I'm very satisfied with these combinations. Picking my favorite combination is difficult as these guitars have different personalities.

2013 SG - SD WLH set
2013 SG - DMZ 36 Anniversary Set
1993 SG - DMZ PAF Master Set
SG Firebrand - DMZ 36 Ann neck, DMZ Air Norton

Honorable Mentions
SD 59 - neck
SD Pearly Gates
SD Jazz neck and bridge
SD Screaming Demon - the name doesn't describe the pickup or do it justice.

Honorable Mention:
PRS SE Santana - SD WLH neck and SD 59/Custom Hybrid bridge

Interesting video. I don't really hear a lot of difference either. Maybe slightly more bite and note separation with the 490/498 combo. If I had either pickup I would be happy I think.

Through my speakers and to my ears , the 57's have more bite, clarity of note and chime than the 490 / 498, from that video. Must say that I have lost quite a bit of high frequency hearing and I don't wear hearing aids. And I've only owned one SG...it came iith 57s.

Yes, I hear that the 490´s are more mid and narrow sounding (less bass and less crystal highs - good for drive) and 57 more open sounding with more bass and high freq for pleasant cleans. With a good eq tweaking on a drive pedal the 57 can get nearly the same mid, anyhow. It´s harder to tweak the clean on the 490.
I´ve tried it, and went for the 57
