One of the most evocative things about playing an old guitar is that nitro smell when you open the case. Nitro Fenders still have it, why not Gibsons?

Henry J won't pay for the faerie dust anymore. :laugh2:
Seriously, I've sprayed nitro in a paint booth and that ain't what you're smellin'. Some of the solvents involved in the curing process might off-gas for a few days or even a month, but the claim of vanilla scented cases is one that I have never experienced with any guitar, nitro or poly.

Ok then maybe that smell is the glue used in making the case.

P.s. PRS customs smell like vanilla. Not sure if it's the guitar or case.

OK. So maybe fender cases have a distinctive smell :)

P.s. PRS customs smell of vanilla. Again, might be the case

Back in the late 60s & early 70s when we played SGs exclusively, when you bought a brand new one ($249.50 for a new Standard) they had a certain smell to them; you could smell them anywhere in the room when you took it out of the case. We even had a name for what we thought we were smelling: Gibsonite!

    More undead threads... Okay...

But in all seriousness, my SG had it when it was new and my Firebird has it.

My SG had it for a good few months when I bought it. Only realised last week that it was gone

My 2013 SG Deluxe still has it, but it spends a lot of time in its case. Opening that case always make me go WOW!

My new SG and my ten year old Es-335 have the nitro smell. My seventeen year old G&L and my two year old Gretsch both still has the vanilla case glue smell.

When I kept my SG in the case day in, day out it had a strong vanilla smell. I don't know if that is nitro smell or not. I would like to share a recent observation though. I had a sizeable chip out of my 2015 (Nitro Finished?) SG, due to my carelessness. As usual, my wife calls me a bull in a china shop. I kept the chunk of displaced lacquer and cycled it from the freezer into boiling water, back to freezer, into the water etc, etc .. seeing if I could get it to get brittle and crack, like how those guys relic guitars, RESULTS ?? no difference, hot or cold the lacquer felt and behaved the same as far as pliability was concerned. I am told current lacquer is Nitro with a hefty addition of plasticizers to prevent lacquer cracking/checking. By the way the Lacquer used on the 2015's measures .006" thick, the vernier don't lie. Thank You

Yeah, nitro formulas have been updated throughout the years to make them more durable, plus Gibson doesn't use nitro on all their guitars, as I was told in our local high-end guitar store.

I read that the Vanilla scent is added at the factory, why? I have no idea. Had a collision with a door frame, klutz that I am and I did notice that under a hunk of displaced lacquer, that my Cherry Red 2015 SG is bare light colored, unfinished mahogany, the Cherry Red color is purely in the tinted finish only. Do I feel ripped off?? I don't know, but I thought that they used to stain the actual guitar red and then clear it. I don't know much about the topic ...
