If it's your second SG, what is your 1st one? We'd love to see it in Pix. Second, the type of music you play will be a factor. And certainly if you have a limitless amount of money then a mint 61 original would certainly be there........ but if you're like most of us, give us a ball park figure to deal with. This will help us better know what you might be happiest with.
We can prolly supply pix and links for suggestions.......... just let us know what's on your mind! 8) 8) 8)
I'm fully prepared to get flamed on this one, but I think walnut stain sucks. It just looks like the bad decisions of the 70's to me. I also don't like the yellowed inlays...... But I don't wanna drag you down if it's your bag. If that's the guitar for you, then bombs away, go after it!
If it was me and I had $1800, I'd first be looking for a used white custom with a Vibrola. If I couldn't do it for the $, I'd look for a used custom shop 61 or 62 RI with a vibrola. Then of those didn't work out, I'd be looking for an SG Supreme either in Blue or Green........

Yup, I reckon the satin finish walnut looks like something I'd knock up in the garage over a weekend that's been reclaimed out of a piece of muy parent's furniture!
If your only SG experience so far is an Epi G400 i would suggest playing a few Gibson for comparison. The Epi Sg whilst a great guitar at the price point isnt really like a Gibson SG.
Try playing the special(faded?) Standard and 61 Reissue back to back and see which you like best. necks and pups vary from model to model so its difficult for anyone to say ...'buy this guitar'...
The Classic SG is another great value guitar although you will have to make your own mind up whether you like the P90's or not.
On a tighter budget you cant beat the Standard for an all rounder, though the Classic and specials are cheaper.
Good luck and as ever more posts and pics of whatever it is you decide to get!!!
best for the cash is the Special Faded! $580 @ MF I have 2 61RI's and a faded i like the 61's more but the faded gets played more! ( well not now its getting a new finish, not going to be faded for long!)
