One of the greatest lines in movie history. From CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. Richard Dreyfuss cracks a half-smile and says, "Who are you people?" Well, that's what I want to know here. Who are you people?

It seems whenever I bring up my Rickenbacker or my Stratocaster...I get disbelief that somebody here at this site actually plays them. I am kind of getting the picture that you folks here are a different breed. Please answer these few questions so I can confirm what I suspect about many members here.

    1. You would rather listen to:
    A) Eddie Van Halen on guitar
    B) Chet Atkins on guitar

    2. You
    A) own a dirt pedal
    B) do not own a dirt pedal

    3. You
    A) have or had long hair
    B) keep it short

    4) You prefer
    A) a Floyd Rose type trem unit
    B) a Bigsby trem unit

    5) You can
    A) tap or do pinch harmonics
    B) Travis pick

    6) You
    A) own or want a Marshall amp
    B) own or want a VOX amp

    7) You love
    A) power chords
    B) arpeggio chords

I suspect the majority here will answer A to those questions.

    1. B
    2. B
    3. A when young, B now
    4. Neither
    5. A
    6. Was A, now B
    7. Neither - any multiple string combo played with a pick is an arpeggio. You want a chord, you need to finger pick.

    loaded questions.

I dislike Floyd rose and Bigsby systems equally.
Like both Marshall and Vox amps. but I prefer weirder ones. Selmer, old magnatones, old traynors and Hiwatts.

I wish Rickenbacker made a 330 with a friendly to the human hand shaped neck profile...without finish on the rosewood fingerboard.

But until that time comes i won't own another guitar made by Rickenbacker.

there are too many Strats in the world.

4, Give me a nice strings thru or a hard tail. I'm old school. I have both, and prefer neither.
6, Never wanted a Marshall or a Vox. I have Roland.

So you expect SG forum members to prefer the classic SG Floyd Rose trem to the typical shredders choice of a Bigsby vibrato? That and the fact you're calling the Bigsby a 'trem' says it all really.

When are you gonna quit with these obviously and purposefully shitstirring threads? You seem to have the idea in your head that everyone here is thrash metal fan with room full of Marshall heads and Megadeth posters. The diversity of musical styles and tastes that the people on this forum have is insane and for you to reduce it down to "You folks are a different breed" is just disrespectful. What's even wrong with people answering A for these questions? You've framed it in a way that suggests that it's something to look down upon. Let people like what they like

I'll appease you though mate, here's my answers

    1. A, I enjoy both but I've found myself listening to EVH a lot recently given his passing
    2. B, the only pedal I own is a clean boost
    3. A, not sure how this question is relevant at all. There have been musos from literally every genre ever that have had long hair
    4. B
    5. Both
    6. A, I don't own a Marshall but and old plexi is my dream amp. I almost bought a Vox a few years ago but prefer the cleans from my Fender which is what I bought instead
    7. Both.

    They are vibrato bars.

    Gibson calls it a "Vibrola".

Maestro Vibrola - used on SG Standards and Customs

Short Vibrola - used on SG Juniors and Specials

Tremelo is a steady increase and decrease in volume.
Vibrato is a steady increase and decrease in pitch.

    I am the Walrus.

You are going to deny the fact that that might be true?

Look, ever go to a Gretsch site? I'll tell you, the majority of the folks there are into rockabilly, old '50s style music (and dress). I have never been to a BC Rich site, but I bet the members there are not playing bluegrass and jugband music.

All I know is that every time I bring up my Rickenbackers here, folks act as though I am some alien from a far off galaxy who plays this strange thing called a Rickenbacker.

Yes, I know all that. But Leo called it a tremolo unit and that stuck.
Most people know what we are talking about when we say a tremolo unit on a guitar.

Leo also got the name wrong when it came to his amps. His Vibrato channels are really tremolo channels.

On one model of the VOX AC30 (the very model I have) the standby switch should really have been called the "blow your rectifier" switch. If you use it, a surge hits the rectifier tube and blows it. You are supposed to keep the "standby" switch on at all times.

Yes I have, I'm registered to one of them as Rockabilly happens to be one of the genres I favour and my g5420 sees almost just as much use as my SG. And what I've noticed there is that, yes a lot us are Cochran, Atkins, Gallup and Setzer fans, but quite a large portion of that forum is into 70's rock n roll because of Malcolm Young.

And no, I don't think it's at all true that we all listen to Heavy Metal and Hard Rock on this site, though I'm sure some do. The only reason people view the SG as a "metal" guitar is Iommi and most modern metal fans wouldn't even consider an SG for metal.

My point is that a guitar as versatile as an SG can't just be ignorantly pinned into one genre like you seem so eager to do for some reason. As far as the Rickenbacker thing, they aren't anywhere near as common as a Gibson or a Fender and have a very particular niche. I don't think owning a Rick is that strange but I can imagine that for a lot of people they would've only ever seen one in the hands of Lennon. Much like they would've only seen a Hofner in the hands of McCartney

    1. You would rather listen to:
    B) Chet Atkins on guitar

    2. You
    B) do not own a dirt pedal

    3. You
    B) keep it short (I'm black so this question is kinda irrelevant to me)

    4) You prefer
    none at all

    5) You can
    A) do pinch harmonics

    6) You
    A) own or want a Marshall amp

    7) You love
    B) arpeggio chords

Angus Young may be my guitar hero but his choice of axe has never had any bearing on my preference for the Gibson SG considering I was a fan of that guitar before even becoming an AC/DC fan. As far as the metal argument, I thought metal heads played and were only concerned with Ibanez, Dean, ESP and Jackson guitars. Alot of the guitarists I'm familiar with who play SG's dont even play metal other than the obvious Iommi.

Are you surprised at the answers? I find most players like more variety than you may think.
