Let's admit it, we are obviously on to something here. :)

Let's take a closer look, shall we?

    • The SG is made by Gibson. Gibson's are good. They are art in guitar form.
    • The SG has a neck that is really long, and that means more notes to play! :dunno:
    • The SG is light weight. You can fly around the stage jumping over things while playing hard solos and screaming.
    • The SG is drop dead sexy! Whip it out of the case and you have to fight the girls off from attacking you.
    • The SG has a mid range growl that can cut through a band mix like hot butter through a knife! ... especially the P90 versions.
    • You can shake the SG at both ends and get a better vibrato than Paul Kossoff
    • The SG is the best bang for the buck for a quality guitar on this Planet at this very moment!
    • You can sleep with your SG and it won't hog the covers like a Les Paul will.
    • They come with P90s which make Fender single coil guitars look silly.
    • Pete Townsend made history with the SG, what more do ya want?
That's about all I can think of at the moment unless someone else wants to chime in :dunno:

The original metal was made with an SG - hat's off to Tony
The original party rock was made with an SG - hat's off to Angus
The original art rock was made with an SG - hat's off to Frank

    I'LL PLAY!

when I walk over to pick up a guitar to relax and play for hours = White SG
when I have little time and just wanna strum (or flog a guitar) for a minute= Black SG
when I think about a world where I had to chose but 1 guitar and ONLY 1= SG
when I look at guitar porn on Sweetwater and other sites I drool over the SG's
When someone asks what I play/own =SG!!! even though at any given time I have multiple brands lying around

I've owned dozens and dozens of guitars, I have "flipped" even more Yami, Squire, Aria Pro, Lotus, B.C. Rich, Peavey, Fender and multiple others I don't even remember........ can't explain it.......the SG is JUST right.

No "corksniffing" no pretension no hype no "frills" it is the ultimate cut the BULLSHAT sit down STF up and PLAY instrument.

    ** in A sentence **

Raw, Function in Awesome Form, Period.:dude:

    Now THATS a rant :):applause::naughty:

•One of the most unique forms of Sixties rock was done on the SG: Hats off to Robby Kreiger (the Doors for you young guys)
•The origins of Punk were pioneered by Pete Townshend on an SG: no hats in evidence
•The music of Robert Johnson was popularized for the world by Eric Clapton on an SG with Cream: No hats would fit over the Big Hair.
•Some of the strangest and most creative music that defies category was created by Frank Zappa on an SG. His son Dweezil continues the quest in his own way.
•Some of the most authoritarian music of the 70s was created by Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult on an SG: off hats, and kneel down on them.

In recent times, guitarists have many many more choices than we did when I (and the music above) was young. Other guitars have strong followings... especially Fenders but also PRS, Ibanez, Jackson, Charvel, Music Man, Peavey, Parker... Ricks and Gretsch too, not to mention our cousins Epiphone... So the fact that SGs are still selling well says worlds. (it's true for strats and teles and lesters too of course, all of the 'classic designs" have proven themselves.) I don't know which sells the most, probably the Stratocaster if I had to guess. But I still think the fact that the SG is a strong contender in a field of excellence like the above means that the title of this thread is no idle boast.

Paul Balmer gave his new SG book a subtitle, and this also says worlds:

How to buy, maintain and setup
Gibson's all time best selling guitar

Sorry, but I have to debunk some of these:

The SG is made by Gibson. Gibson's are good. They are art in guitar form.
Come on, we all know Gibson has had numerous problems -- legal and quality control -- in recent times.

The SG is the best bang for the buck for a quality guitar on this Planet at this very moment!
Nah, the Epiphone Casino is far and away the best bang for buck guitar out there.

The SG has a mid range growl that can cut through a band mix like hot butter through a knife! ... especially the P90 versions.
Many of us do not like mid-range, but rather prefer high end. Nothing cuts through like high end treble.

Pete Townsend made history with the SG, what more do ya want?
Uhh, Pete Townshend made early history with his Rickenbackers and then when everyone thought he was using an SG -- for The Who's greatest, most rocking rock albums: "Quadrophenia" and "Who's Next" -- the truth is he used a Gretsch, not an SG.

Sorry folks, the great SG user Pete Townshend really used a Gretsch 6120 to get his most kick ass rocking sound.

Pete got his live kick ass sound from 68-70 with his SG..he used it for a reason. The Who is my favorite band, and Pete my favorite guitarist..to me, that was his best sounding time..

Dude, most of the world did not see The Who live in the late '60s so most of the world knows that kick ass Who sound, their "best sounding time," from the records. And on those records was the sound of a Gretsch 6120. "Won't Get Fooled Again"...I mean you can't get a better rock guitar sound than that, and it wasn't an SG. It was a Gretsch.

As to why Pete played the SG live during those years was twofold: 1) the SG is easier to play live than a huge hollowbody Gretsch, and 2) he sure as hell didn't want to risk damage to his favorite guitar, his Gretsch.

Look, I love my SG, I love my Gretsch, but let's be honest. Pete and The Who's greatest guitar sound was from a Gretsch, not an SG.

Didn't Pete destroy SG's (and Fenders) and LEs Pauls on stage?????? (A practice that always makes me a little sad and angry) I never saw him destroy a Gretsch.....
Not takin sides here.....just an observation.....

Yeah, and he also destroyed Rickenbackers.

I have read quotes from Townshend where he states his favorite guitar of all he owned was that Gretsch 6120. It was a gift or a trade with Joe Walsh and Townshend couldn't believe how hot the pickups were in the Gretsch. He has said it was the loudest guitar he ever played. He realized he had something very special in that Gretsch.

I will have to disagree with that statement. Pete's best guitar sound, in my opinion, is from Live At Leeds. That is a SG loaded with P90's.

    Young Man's Blues - YouTube

It's from Live at the isle of White. Same area as Leeds and same great tone.
