Just out of curiosity with all the different preferences we all have, which is your absolute definitive guitar knob styling and why?

on SG, top hats for sure...speed knobs just make them feel cramped.
else my next go to are metal dome knobs.

For me the top hats (reflectors) have always moved the smoothest. That added with the pointers on my 61 and it’s a perfect combo. I do love the classic look of the witch hats, and on my guitars that have them they work great. They feel smaller to the finger, and I like that my finger rests in the base, but alas they don’t feel as smooth as the top hats. I can see why angus likes the grip being so sweaty, that’s just not my environment being a basement player.

The speed knobs take last place both in looks and feel for me.

your list is basically in my order of preference

Back in the 70s, when electric guitars still had something 'modern' about them, I just liked speed knobs, because everything else looked like it came off a 1940s radio. These days, speed knobs look just as 'retro' as all the others, and electric guitars themselves have become like period furniture, with collectors fussing over historical accuracy.

I'm looking back to when guitars were futuristic, and suggest we get rid of knobs all together - just swipe the top of the pickup for volume, and the bottom for tone. :D

Seriously, I don't really care - though we've all got so used to certain looks that even those cheap and nasty Stratocaster knobs are the only thing that look right on a Strat. Really, by having made changes over the years, the SG is lucky to have not fallen into that trap, and (almost) any knob style can look OK.

Ibanez Sure grip 1, have them in my Ibanez LP. Not that I use knobs, they just look cool.

    Reflectors have silver inserts.
Top Hats do not have silver inserts.
I've also seen both referred to as Bell Knobs.

    Pictured below are Reflectors:

I voted "Top Hat" but meant "Reflector" I guess...

thanks for voting, I’m aware of the subtle distinctions the guy pointed out, but decided to keep it simple, hence the picture i posted. That and the top hat (non-reflector knobs) dont look like tophats to me, just curved speed knobs really. All good.

I spent twenty years with my main squeeze being a '74 Kalamazoo Small Script Standard with gold reflectors (gold inserts). Got used to them.

I suppose I prefer reflectors. :naughty:

It would seem that they are also called "Top Hat" knobs "With Metal Inserts"...

I am not a huge LP fan Bob, but that is one stunning guitar.

Yeah, reflectors for me too. They're not too big nor too small, perfect size. And classy. With pointers, of course.

Disclaimer: I have only been playing since early 1999 (with a 10 year break in-between for multiple reasons) so I'm sure part of my preferences are influenced by whatever I first saw at the time.

I like top hats/reflectors the best on most SG's for both looks and functionality. Also it is what I have seen on a majority of SGs throughout the years. Although I do have to admit the witch hats look good on some of the classic SG models and colors.

Functionally speed knobs are great but to me they look like something that would come on a lower priced model being a basic rounded chunk of plastic with little style in my opinion.

I've always associated speed knobs with Les Paul Customs... I suppose it's because my 1991 Studio has them too:

That said, speed knobs on an SG somehow looks wrong to me...
