Hello everyone,
Before I tell you guys about my musical experiance or whatever you guys wanna call it, I should introduce myself officially. My name is Nate Mitchell, I'm 17 and I live in a small Southwest Virginia town called Bristol. A few quick non-musical things about me: I love the outdoors (I've been to Philmont, if anyone knows what that is, but its a famous hiking area), I like playing racketball and golf, or at least I did until my car crash near the end of May this year. Don't worry about me though (I'm sure you don't lol), I'm fine (now) and will be completely back to doing that kinda stuff in about a month.
OKAY, enough boring stuff. Music is what we are here for. I did not start playing guitar. I've been singing since I was about 5 in local choirs and such, nothing special, and I didn't really take it that seriously (regretfully, actually, as I've lost a good singing voice). I began taking music seriously about the age of 7 when I began piano. I fell in love with music then and I hope to become a fairly accomplished pianist at some point in the future (not accomplished like famous, but just happy where my technical level is).
I got my first guitar, a Woody acoustic guitar about a year and a half ago, from my Godfather as a christmas gift, I'd been fiddling around with my friends Squier Strat since about 8 months before that though, but by the time I got my own guitar, I could only play Pinball Wizard (and not even the whole thing).
A year later I bought my SG and basically thats where I'm at right now. While piano is my main instrument and practicing it along with schoolwork and the High School Band doesn't allow much time for Guitar, I hope to devote alot of time after the whole applying for college (and preparing my piano audition, which is the most straining thing right now lol) thing is over with, possibly the beginning of 2009 , completely to become a better guitarist.
I've also began writing music and lyrics (lyrics a bit longer then music), and if I get recordings of them, I'll make sure to post em.
Thats me in a nutshell, oh, unless you guys want a quick rundown of what kinda music I'm into. So I'll give a top list of my favorite artists real quick.
The Who: All time favorite, The first band which really made me LOVE rock. Until they came along it was alot of country, pop, and classical music for me. And since I first heard Baba O'Riley on my local classic rock station, my love for them has never died down. I love Pete Townshend's beautiful lyrics combined with raw, real rock.
Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler: While I love The Who for their lyrics and inspiring anthems, my favorite overall genre of music is easy-listening, sit-back-and-let-it-flow rock. Of these bands, I can't think of one I'd rather listen to then Dire Straits. the greatest listening experiance for me is driving down the interstate late at night and popping in "Makin' Movies" or Knopfler's new album, "Kill to Get Crimson."
Neil Young: my favorite acoustic player, Heart of Gold made me pick up the harmonica and Down By The River was the first song I ever jammed to (with the owner of a local music store). I HATED his voice when I first heard it, but his voice grows on you and his lyrics and symbolism are some of the best out there.
Bruce Springsteen: If i could be in a band that came anywhere near the E Street Band, I would die happier then I could ever hope for. I actually knew Springsteen before The Who, but didn't really appretiate him then. He took my concert virginity (actually, N*SYNC did, but that was rape lol, I was only 5 and my sister loved them, so I had to go). And that concert I severely doubt that I will ever forget. Like Pete Townshend, I find it utterly unbelievable how anyone could write songs that so many people could listen to and just say "yea, I know what he means" its like he gets.... EVERYBODY lol.
But yea, there's me. Hope you like me ;D
