That was actually the one that brought up the idea of getting one..the Grunge that is. I thought it had a nice balance between a defined tone and just noise. (which can be good, but it has to have some redeeming quality of it).

That's what I like about it too. It's not just a noise distortion, but it still has that buzzsaw edge to it that I love. I expected it to be just another mega-gain fuzz junk metal distortion when I bought the preamp, but it really blew me away. I've probably owned 20 different distortion devices over the years, and the only ones that even touched down in the same universe as the Grunge were the Ibanez Sonic Distortion and the Peavey Rockmaster preamp, and they still were a far cry from my current tone.

After thinking about it, the only difference I can think of between the stompbox and my version would be the tone control. The Grunge in my preamp has no tone control, just master volume and gain. My tonal range comes from the chain EQ and a global EQ for the preamp, as well as speakers & guitars. But, I'm sure the overall distortion tone is the same. It's a pretty cheap buy too ($40 new). It may not be everyone's cup to tea, but I love it.

I haven't bought a guitar online because I like to play it first and see if I like it. Feeling is the most important thing to me, and every guitar I have played has a little different feeling (even if its the same model) and I want to make sure I like the feeling and its sound before I buy it. The only problem with the guitar shops around here is there is not a big selection of guitars in the stores. Someday I might buy a vintage guitar (I havent seen any good vintage guitars for sale around here) off ebay and hope I like it, but until then I'll stick to buying stuff such as pedals online.

MF has a nice try-it-out policy. if you dont like it for whatever reason, just send it back. But I like the fact that the people at the music store treat it nicely, set it up, and give it a once-over before you walk out with it.
