I just bought a 2013 SG original. The case it came with says "Gibson USA" on it. However, its not the usual TKL case that I'm used to seeing Gibsons come with. The quality isn't as nice, made in Costa Rica, not Canada like the TKL's, flimsy latches and handle, seems more like a budget Epiphone case and not the usual Gibson case. Anyone else bought an Original lately and get this kind of case with it?

Show us what you got so we can compare.

It's hard to see what you mean without pictures.

There are cases and then there are cases. Here's my (Epiphone) case for my SG-400 Deluxe. I'm sure they're not all the same but I couldn't ask for more without getting a professional road case. It's a perfect fit. Snug, protected and very well made. I think it's vinyl but the thing feels leather bound.

I just bought a 2013 Original and it also has a case made in Costa Rica. It is a slightly heavier case and seems more sturdy than my Canadian made Gibson cases. My only issue is the compartment opens the opposite way and has less storage room. My guess is they went the way of cheaper production again:(

My 2013 SG Standard came with the heavier Costa Rica case.

A client's new SG came in a Costa Rican case. Heavier construction than TKL, but I would have added a back latch. Seems like a very good case, to me. The padding, while not as white as TKL, is actually a bit thicker. The case, itself, is a good bit heavier and thicker than it's Canadian cousins. Had the chocolate smell.I thought it quite good.

The practice of using the Costa Rican made case has been around for at least a couple of years. The 2012 Jeff Tweedy SG I had included this model, which I recall thinking was a little odd at the time. It is fairly easy to tell the difference: small accessory compartment with different (black-colored?) pull-tab on the reverse-opening lid, and the covering is more of of a leather-looking tolex as opposed to the "reptile". It was a very snug-fitting case. Perhaps Gibson uses them when they run out of stock on the TKLs...

I've got an SG Original with the Costa Rica case. The case seems pretty sturdy and it actually stays propped open better than the Canadian case my SG Standard came with, so I'm quite satisfied with it.
