I have a 2009 SG Special Faded (brown). I am going to put in a SD Pearly Gates bridge and 59 neck. I was thinking of going with 50s wiring to retain treble at lower volume.
I am thinking about coil splitting both pups. Is there any downside to doing this? If having a coil split option would negatively impact the tone when the coils are not split, then I probably won't bother, but I was thinking it would be nice to have that option.
Also, does coil splitting work with 50s wiring?

I've got an Epi 60's Tribute with USA Gibson 57/57+ pickups coil split. I dont think its 50's wiring though. It is nice to have some options, especially in a live situation. It's not quite a full on single coil sound to me, prolly somewhere between a single coil and a p90. As far as loss of tone when in full humbucker mode it sounds as 57's should no one change that I can find.

Just a piece of advice: make sure the push-pulls fit! The cavity is super-shallow on the SG's and I couldn't fit a couple of Dimarzios I bought for my old SG...

And coil splits don't affect the "normal" series tone at all, don't worry! While you're at it, read about the differences between coil-splits and parallel wiring, the later sounds single coilish too, but it's hum free, might be worth a try!
