OK guys I have finally my SG done (except for Alu-Stoptail to come) and want to share my experience on my finalised PUP-Setup.
Neck is a P-Rail with a DPDT-Switch to choose from Rail-Singlecoil, P90 and Humbuckermode, Bridge is a DiMarzio Airzone with a Push-Pull Singlecoil Option.
Switch for Duncan replaced one Tonepot, Push-Pull replaced Volumepot of Bridge.
Neck:
The neck position sounds just awesome on P 90 mode - a little snappy, warm but not woofy, grinding but tasteful sound which is great for clean, awesome for crunch and really usable for distorted and Leadsounds!!!.
I never played Heavy Crunch Sounds on the neck for rhythm because i hate it when the guitar sound indifferent and too woofy - don't get me wrong my heavy Crunch/Leadsounds have a big bottom end.
The single coil option works standing alone well for FX-loaded sounds but is not a big thing (as usual Singlecoils are not very often on a mahogany guitar) but the sound is usable.
The humbucker mode sounds really good too, much better than Stock Gibson IMO.
The P90 mode is worth the pup alone, it sings swings bounces and bites but always stays warm and has clarity combined with power - 100% awesome!!!
Middle position:
Combining P90 and Rail with the Splitmode of the airzone or the airzone in Humbucker mode gives a lot of great sounds - and some you would never expect from an SG - quite impressive.
Neck:
You like that little old band from Texas? Oh my gosh, you should go Airzone.
Clean quite usable but that is not the ballpark of the humbucker mode of the airzone.
Crunch to lead is the real thing.
Very full sound - yes the highs are decent - but that mid growl sounding a little big like wah if you pick the string right is just great. Harmonics stream out of your cabinet - very special sound but wow!
Picksensitivity is unbelievable - never felt such a dynamic pup - I do not know how they do it!
A clear not too woofy neck - combined with a hot sounding but sensitive bridgepup - my search was long and filled with trial and error but finally I am there.
I can play any sound on any position and I never feel like readjusting the EQ - my sound taste and needs are not the usual, I have a clear vision and I am a 100% satisfied with my pupcombo after playing this SG for 14 years now.
Hope I could give you a good impression - going DiMarzio was so right - I know not too many consider them but they are worth a try.
Cheers Tobi
