Hi all,

I'm new to ETSG now.
It seems that I'm going to buy an Epi SG. As subject shows I'm thinking of buying a Custom. The only problem is that I can not try but I can only order.
:(

So please help me!
Does the middle pickup make any sense - I mean is it really useful?
Or even some say it's rather bothering?

If you won't tell me Custom is much better I'll probably choose the simple G400 cherry :)
It's much easier to buy ...and I like the colour

thanks a lot!

Welcome aboard JmOS. Stick with the G-400,its not bad at all
and down the road you can make it better by changing out the Electronics,
Tuners and Pick ups.

welcome J !!, i've never played a 3 pup model myself.....so i don't know if what i'm about to pass on is true, but i've heard that 3 humbuckers can actually hurt sustain......from all the magnets pulling on the strings not letting them vibrate freely.......

If you play aggressively sometimes the middle pup gets in the way of your pick, but you can get used to it.

Hi JmOS, and welcome to ETSG.

I owned a '71 Gibby SG Custom back in the late '70's and early '80s. I never used the middle pup, but I was a kid back then and was only interested in how much noise I could make under distortion... Come to think of it, I didn't play much on the Rhythm pup either...

Any way, you've come to the right place. Tom, the admin, has a Custom and so do several of the other guys here. As for Epi, I currently own a G-400 Korina, and it plays as smooth as I ever remember the Custom being. Expect to have to change out the pup switch; everyone I've ever talked to has had trouble with them (present party included).

Also, before ordering one on-line I would recommend you read some of the recent horror stories posted here in the forums...
