I just saw this at Musicians Friend/Music 123/Guitar Center.

The Gibson Korina SG Standard is a limited edition reissue of the early '60s SG Les Paul Standard electric guitar. This Gibson Custom Shop guitar is made to historic SG/LP standard specs, but is constructed with exotic korina instead of the more common mahogany.

Now that may be a good idea from Gibson's R and D people! I like the SG standard look, and I bet the korina will sound quite nice - it is also called "African limba" and is very similar to mahogany, but a bit lighter. It was used on previous models like the V's.
The specs say the neck too is made from korina. Too bad it's another $3000 plus item! I wonder what other finishes are available, such a nice wood should have a natural option.

It's available in 3 finishes:

Antique Pelham Blue
Inverness Green
Classic White

Unfortunately Natural isn't one of them.

Don't know about the others, but I'm sure they fired the guy that priced them, so they keep on generating random price tags now, says me :p ;D

Wasn't there a failed limited editon Korina SG with a strip of redwood in the middle sometime in the early 90's?

Not sure what you mean by failed, but yes there was. I don't think they finished the entire run so that might be what you are talking about.

As big of a "mahogany or it ain't an SG" guy that I am, that natural Korina SG from the '90's was abeautiful guitar. Mahogany was made to be stained.

When I said failed I was refering to the fact that they never finished the run supposedly because they ran out of wood

Do they have people with brains down at Gibson or have they laid them all off? ???

Perhaps those ex-employees should get together with Heritage, the Kalamazoo jazz box makers, and then they could add real SG's and such to their line at a better price than Gibson.

I'd take the one Tom posted any day. The others look like garbage to me. That one is very very nice.

Natural finish Korina bodies are stunning.

Wow, I think it's a shame to offer Korina without the natural finish option. If I would ever be able to afford to buy a nice Korina guitar, for me it's a no brain'er, it's going to be natural finish. Wonder how it sounds with the rosewood fingerboard and burstbucker pickups.

I like Tom's pics, sweet!

1way, I agree! I'd want it in natural too. Perhaps the stock of Korina/Limba wood is not too pretty, has lots of flaws that need filing, or in small pieces and the bodies are glued together, or some such reason that would make Gibson avoid the obvious natural finish.

There's one up on the bay right now. For me it's a really cool look, but I'm not willing to pay over 3K for a glorified standard...no matter how cool or rare. I hope they'll do a run of these that's reasonable and natural finish...
