Here is my wonderful response from Gibson.
As your reading this think of the voice of the robot on Lost In Space. Danger Will Robertson!
Dennis,
Thanks for writing. If you're not satisfied with your brand new purchase, I'd suggest contacting your dealer to inquire about a return/exchange policy.

The dealer has to look at the guitar and document the problem and fix it if possible. Gibson is not going to take the word of everyone who says that they have a problem. You can take it to a Gibson warranty center. of course they will replace it as a last resort.
It makes you wonder how many times this, Blake R. Howard, has had to cut and past this robotic, devoid of any personality, response. :bs:
I'm still waiting to hear from Music123. Can't wait for that one.
I went to GC to check this topic out first hand. I own a 1999 model and bought it used and it was and is flawless I really haven't played with a new SG before. First I checked out a '61 reissue. It looked OK but the cutout around the pickguard was awful, all chopped up and rough. There was a small display of Standards I checked out. The finish was terrible on two of them, like the paint/Varnish ran, totally unacceptable, I don't think anyone would buy these two guitars if you saw them. Some of the binding didn't look all that good either. I played with a couple of specials, some of them had the same finish problems that the Standards did. Actually, the nicest one I found there was a flat black Epiphone, Kinda like an Iomi but not as fancy, this was the nicest one in the store (looks wise). I agree with the initial poster, but it really pains me to say it, quality at Gibson is not up to snuff irregardless of price.
this all depends... if you want it now just keep it and finish it yourself or just let the paint wear... if not... send it to gibson and wait if they will do something
Bottomline, alot of gibsons specially standard models are made for that very reason to be a standard player guitar for the gigging up and coming musicians. As far as more expensive models with flaws well that is just because those guitars quality control is strict but not strict enuff to consider that collector guitars are being played with and not just collected. u cant judge a book by its cover and although there are finish flaws a gibson can easily be looked over when it is played or heard!! :)besides those lil marks are there to set yer sg apart from others!! I recently bought and sg standard and recieved it str8 from the factory and it had blemishes too but it played lord these 6 stringers can play 8) yer guitar will show signs of wear when u get it or twent years from now some marks worse than others but they are all signs of a well played well loved instrument!! 8) :)
If I'm payin good money for something I want something without any flaws, audio OR Finish ... I'm entitled to that! I'm not paying 3500 and lookin the other way ..... olice: :tickedoff: That's :bs:
