Somebody aproached me today and asked if i could join their band. Its not really a serious serious band but they wanted to know if i could do harmonics and "pig squels" with alot of distortion. I dont know to much about harmonics, They mentioned just to learn as much about harmonics and pinch harmonics as i can. Can anyone help me?

pig squeels as in noise guitar? give me some examples of bands that utilize the style you speak of. i'm pretty nifty when it comes to untraditional noise guitar playing. that's what i do.

Google for 'pinch harmonics' ...
+ Practice both with and without an amplifier ...
+ Practice some more ...

I'm assuming you mean pinch harmonics ala Zakk Wylde and Leslie West.. It's really an easy technique once you get the hang of it and it works a little diffrent for everybody.

I generally choke up on my pick and then let the side of my thumb hit the string. It works in almost every postion. You just have to keep on it till you get it !

I just bought tickets for Ozzfest. Not just because it is supposed to be the last year (again) but because BLS does not really tour up here by themselves. But the Ozzfest show isn't until Aug 1st. Anyway I'm getting the natural harmonics down, on the 12th 7th and 5th frets but any frets lower than that i can really do. Just starting to work on pinch harmonics. Man their hard to get. Whats a the best example of a song Zack Wylde uses them in?

A friendly tip:

[glow=red,2,300]BRAND NEW STRINGS![/glow] :coolsmiley: They "ring" far better than old crusty/corroded strings. Ernie Ball strings seem real bright right out of the package. Dean Marlkey seems rather dull. These two brand comparisons are my own opinion. Others may have other ideas.

If you are not made of money, and hate spending the time to change your strings (like me)...keeping your strings clean/putting your guitar back in its case after playing will increase that "fresh string feeling" a lot.

Amps are important, but pickups are even more important. "Hot", high-output pickups are generally better at harmonics than classic style pickups.

Heavier distortion helps quite a bit too. Kick up the gain! O0

zakk wylde is the master at that stuff. a pinch harmonic is an artificial harmonic, you have the find the harmonic sweet spot by the pickups, for a 22 fret guitar it's going to be where the 24th fret would be. for my sg its right at the back of the neck pickup. its that combines with a picking technique. choke up to the end of the pick and use the side, it helps. it takes practice though. thats the artifical harmonic.

My bass player made a comment last week that I'd never heard before. I was noodling and he asked how I could get such good pinch harmonics with such a heavy pick(I use Dunlop 2.0mm). I'd never heard that one before, so maybe a lighter pick would help you. I've never had a problem using heavy picks, but there could be something to it.

With practice you can play "pinch-harmonics" all over the neck on both clean and dirty amp settings. As many have said, choke up on your pick(I use fender medium) and angle slightly when stricking string. Your thumb must brush against the string while striking to produce the harmonic or "squeal" as you called it.

Listen to ZZ Top, Tres Hombres
