hey, I currently have an Epiphone SG and I've been playing for a year and a half now. The thing is, I'm really unhappy with the guitar for a whole lot of reasons. I just so happen to have 800 bucks worth of graduation money, so I was wondering if I should purchase a Gibson SG faded special, or possibly save up a little more to be able to afford an SG special or save a whole lot more and get a Standard SG?

Please much advice is needed

thanks ;D

Well, all I know is that it's not worth saving for the special instead of the Faded because the Faded is exactly the same except for the finish. Worn Brown looks pretty nice. :)

Yeah, worn brown does look nice

but I dunno if I should still save up for the standard

I've played both before, I like both of them, but I love the tone from the standard a lot better but the faded is such a sweet buy for the price

I'm really conflicted right now lol

Welcome to ETSG zepphead121! :) :) :)

Your best purchase will be the one you are totally happy with. If you want the Standard, then it will take a little more time. A Special shouldn't run as much if you like the sound. Faded I don't know that much about..... mine are faded by time. ;) But an important thing to remember is that if you are not in a hurry, keep your eyes peeled. SG's are there from time to time at excellent prices. If you come across one that may need some work.... set up or such.... you may get it for less and a little money into the set up, you still pay less the buying a new or used one from a shop.......... 8) 8) 8)

Welcome to ETSG !! like other people have said, the special is a great guitar, and the only non-cosmetic difference between it and the Standard, is the bridge pickup. If you like the Standard better, than save up longer for one. You have to get a guitar that you will be happy with.

welcome zepphead.....the price on the faded will allow you to upgrade as you can and get any sound you want you know. also could be that if you upgraded your electronics you'd be happy with the epi. what were the reasons you're unhappy with the epi??

I didnt like the epi cos of the stock pickups, the fact that the thing detuned easily, the neck was heavier than the body itself, and the nut wasn't glued in properly.

Nail on the head there.. most, if not all SGs are neck heavy, so you're going to have that problem with a gibson one too. The best remedy for it is to get an extra wide leather strap or something. Or just stick some weights on the body.
For quality, the standard would definately be the best.. but don't overlook the specials. They are really something for a price like that.

This is why I always go with a lighter Kluson peg, as opposed to Grover Rotomatics. If the neck doesn't already point south, it definitely will once you install those Grovers!

My SG Deluxe (1998) with the 3 Mini HB's and Bixby is the only SG
that I know of that the headstock ISN'T magnetized to violently hit
the floor, but it isn't perfectly balanced either....
some guitars just feel like an axe!

unfinished leather straps on the inside (backside?) helps too.........

I never have that problem with my sig model. Maybe the lighter Klusons combined with the extra body weight of the Vibrola evens things out. All I know is, I can take my hands off the neck and it stays put!

Have to agree there EE. My 64 Std had set of Schallers on it when I bought it a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away......
Sorry, drifting off there! ;D I changed them to a set of reissue Klusons about five years ago and, zing!, magic, the guitar balances awhole lot better. it also helps if you have the weight of a vibrola on the back end rather than a stoptail. But then, of course, you know that. ;)

;) I first bought a G-400 then upgraded to the gibson special faded. Then finally saved up and traded that for my standard. I loved the faded but the STANDARD is the $h1T!

Well, you'll ALWAYS WANT A STANDARD! You can get a Classic for
around $900 U.S., I think....(which is what I want next). I have
a Standard and a Faded, love 'em both. You're really close now to
having the money for a Standard. On the EPI, I'd see if I could get a couple hundred on trade or sell it out right for about $300 and go
for the Standard.
