No, some people aren't happy unless they have 500 buck custom made pups in their $300 guitar that they play in their basement alone through a computer amp simulator. Different strokes. I actually care about what something sounds like and don't spend money where it is not required. But hey... some people buy Gibsons just because they are made in the US, not because they make quality guitars. Well quality some of the time anyways. :)

@Barcham: you have a point.. i do like the stock pups in my g400.. but i like the idea of a cheap guitar with good pups. In the end its just the users preference really.. ive tried a epi LP standard & a gibson LP standard plugged into a vox ad30vt same settings.. the gibson really shined but i really liked the epi too which are loaded with Dimarzio 36th anniv PAFs.. :)

Which sound are you after? That's of great importance when choosing pickups! If you can tell us which bands you like to hear, which guitarists, genres, styles,... it becomes easier to send you in the right direction (the decision is always up to you).
The stock pickups in the G400 are in the same ballpark as the JB/Jazz combo. Hot bridge pickup with A5 magnet, well suited for anything with overdriven guitars, even old school metal. The neck pickup is a bit different, the Jazz will be more chimey, but both the Jazz and the stock neck pickup are smooth, jazzy pickups that also work well for solos.
For the other upgrades, CTS pots and a new switch and jack (most people here, including me, use Switchcraft) are great upgrades that don't cost that much and will also bring out the stock pickups' full potential.

This is the P-90 I have in my Lester and I LOVE it. Absolutely NO complaints.

The JB is a great choice then :thumb:
As mentioned above, P-90s are also very cool, I have a pair in my '61 Special and am very fond of them, although they're not the best for metal.

......
(i've also read a LOT of forums saying that a JB sounds dull on a MAHOGANY bodied guitar. and now im confused because i really want that combo in my axe).......

......thanks!

NOT TRUE.

SD him self plays that combination on what guitar you say? an SG Standard.

While not a Epi, but they both should react equally, my 98 Gibson SG Special is equipped with a SD JB at the bridge and she is a monster. BTW what is on the neck? a SD Jazz. Now this is a great combination with a lot of mellow and clear tone at the neck and the SD JB is really responsive to your pick attack. It over drives very well my tubes, creating tons of classic and modern tones.

I also favor the JB on an alder body. I have a Jackson DK2M whish come factory set with a 59/JB combo mounted directly to the body. That is how my love affair with the JB started. I must also add that I do favor the 59 over the Jazz at the neck.

It takes some pick up high adjustment to achieve great tone with them. So if right away you are not getting what you expect, you may need to do some adjustments, but it is all there. The JB is Hot, hot, hot. and the Jazz is clear, warm and mellow, not dirty at all. Is a great complement to the JB.

Now it is just me but I would put a JB on almost anything own.

Added this;

"complete setup
Recommended for bridge position. Often a JB is paired with a neck pickup like the SH-2n Jazz (Seymour's favorite) for versatility or a SH-1 '59 for P.A.F. tones."

Hi , as Wavmixer has said check out iron gear blues engine pups , great sound for not much cash , i have a set in my korine g400 with 50's wiring and pio caps ,
One thing no one has mentioned about the 50's wiring is that if your playing through an overdriven amp (marshall) when you turn down the volume the sound cleans up much faster than with modern wiring , it's the main reason all my nuckered guiitars are wired this way , just thought i'de throw that in lol , cheers

Hell the stock pickups on the G-310 i bought a few months actually suprised the crap outta me.....I probably will change them some day but That could be quite some time... im in the process of changing out the wiring and pots atm and that seems to be changing the charecter of the tone quite nicely and since I only have this one guitar atm ,,,the thought of it not working for a day or so kinda hits me like i feel when its 3am and ive got 2 smokes left and I just got to the party.............LOL and after I have obtained the G-400 faded brown lady Ive got my eyes on,,shes likely to eventually have "dirty fingers"on one hand and pearly Gates at the other....my twisted idea of "Heaven & Hell" installed on my honey!!!!!! ooops i hear Billy Gibbons on spotify....... gotta haul ass and jam...........wooooty
