Hi,

I like the neck on Gibson 1961 Les Paul Tribute SG. It is listed as "slim", but it didn't by all means feel thin. Not chunky either and I'd rather call it sort of "medium" thickness. But I have tried only one sample of the guitar, so maybe there are variations? I have been more a Fender player and cannot stand thin Fender style necks. They have to be at least "medium C" if we are speaking about Fender neck profiles. I am not at all familiar with Gibson necks.

Anyways, I am looking to buy a second hand Derek Trucks SG (2011). Anyone know how does the neck on DT compare to that 1961 Tribute?

If you have any knowledge, I hope you can chime in rather quickly... I need to inform in 24 hours if I want to make the deal :) Online purchase, I cannot try the guitar beforehand.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried searching for the guitars on Gibson's website? They'll state the profile as well as some measurements for several guitars and you can then see you how the 61 compares to the DT.

Hi, yes, basically the measurements are the same, but I'd rather still hear opinions if someone actually tried both guitars. The measurements that Gibson gave to the 1961 Tribute state that the neck really is thin, but it did not feel so thin... Also on youtube there is a video on the DT model made by Guitarist mag and the reviewer don't describe the neck as "thin". He almost has the opposite opinion.

60's Slim Taper are usually thin with less shoulder, and some even feel flat on the back.
50's Rounded are usually thicker with more shoulder and feel rounded on the back.

The 1st and 12th fret thickness is usually specified, but not seeing it in above link.
1st and 12th fret thickness only describes the thickness between the top of the fingerboard to the back of the neck at those tangent points.
The fingerboard has a radius of 12" on most Gibson.
You have no way of knowing the radius (or shoulder) of the back of the neck since they are sanded by hand and will vary from neck to neck even in the same category of 50’s or 60’s profile.

You have to actually handle them in person because of the variance between them.
We all have different preferences and perception of what is thick or thin, rounded or flat.
Only you will know what feels right to you.

True, but I would still value comments if someone has actually tried both of these instrument and can comment how do the necks feel like.

One would think that they are rather similar because DT model is somewhat based on original 1961 Les Paul / SG? :)

I have a 2014 DT, but I ha enever played a '61 reissue, so I can't really comment. However, I was always under the impression that the DT is really "just" a '61 reissue without the pickguard and with a Lyre Vibrola cover added. I might be wrong though.

Anyway, I don't think the differences will be major, but as someone already said, since the necks are sanded by hand, no two will be identical.

There are no bad neck profiles, just different.

Didn't buy DT model back in 2017, but now I am again in the same situation. Can anyone comment how does the DT model neck profile / thickness compare to the 61 reissue (with sideways vibrola)?
