Hello to everyone. I have always loved an SG and used to own a Gibson Standard but had to sell it. I love Epiphone guitars as well. My main guitar is a Les Paul tribute plus. The thing that kept me from buying a G-400 sooner was the lack of neck binding. It just doesn't look right to me. Today while looking on Musician's Friend I found the vintage G-4oo that does have the binding and for only $299. So I ordered one in worn cherry. Wish they had black but, it'll do. I also ordered an Angus Young pickup to go in it. Can't wait till it gets here! :dude:

I though the G400 had binding? Or is it the Pro model that does?

Anyway, welcome and congrats on your new guitar, El Gringo.

Mine doesn't, & I have owned very, very few guitars that did....but being a Cheap Bastard lends itself to a lack of binding ---mentally or guitar neck wise---

I've yet to own binding myself, or a swimming pool for that matter. Or a Learjet, a Ferrari or a Van Gogh. When my ship came in, I was down in the hold scraping paint.

But I can still dream!

Well not sure what I'm actually getting now. The description states it's a vintage G-400 with aged finish and fretboard inlays. The pic shows binding on both models. But after searching here and MLP it seems these are now called faded G-400 and no longer have the bound fretboard. They are supposed to be checking on it and getting back to me, so we'll see. :dunno:

Yeah I thought about that one if I have to send this one back. I've gotten two different responses from MF. One answered an email I sent saying it would be the newer version without binding. So I call in and the lady I talked to swore it would be the vintage model. Said she guaranteed it. She said that even though Epiphone had changed it that they still had the vintage in stock and the change hasn't trickled down to their inventory. It will be here tomorrow so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I received the guitar this morning and it was the newer faded series. So I called up MF and did an exchange for the 50th Anniversary 1961 SG Special. Not my ideal SG but one I kinda wanted anyway. I wonder how many of those they sell to people who don't know the difference. It's not just the lack of binding. The body is different and so were the pickups.

The one you wanted:

I have a couple. They are 2003 models. I believe 2004 was the last year made with binding. I have swapped the pot metal grovers for Epiphone branded klusons on both and added a Maestro and H-90 pickups to one.

While these are getting harder to find, they show-up on Ebay fairly often. I paid $165 for one and $180 for the other. Great guitars, but very delicate wood.

Yeah I guess I'm just gonna have to get a Gibson to drop my Angus pickup in but I'm looking forward to the special too. P90 pickups are pretty cool plus it got really good reviews
