I am looking at buying a new 1966 reissue epi.
I am really wanting to get the Black Sabbath/Tony Iommi sound.
Any advice on how to really get that sound would be great 8).
Also did Gibson make a SG Special that did not have the worn finish?
Thanks in advance.

How 'bout you splurge and get the Epiphone Iommi? The money it'd take to put some Iommi pups in a normal G400 would even out the price difference...

Also, they've been making a regular Special for about 35-40 years longer than the faded Special.

Thanks for responding folks.
I should hve been more clear on my questions.
I thought that Gibson might have made a SG special (glossy finish) in the price range of the faded specials that they sell now.
What dose the term S.O.R. stand for?
Is it the same as the 1966 reissue guitar that the Guitar Center has on thier site for sale right now?
Thanks again.

No, the glossy special is a little more expensive than the faded.

I've got one...and I'm not sure what it stands for...special/standard original reissue?
Yup, that's the SOR on the GC website...which is where I bought mine a year ago.

Incidentally, I went ahead and replaced all the electronics and knobs and switches and installed an Iommi pickup in the bridge position.
As you can probably guess: to get that Black Sabbath/Tony Iommi sound.

Rendus, where did you get the upgrade parts from?
And did it make a really big difference in the sound?
Thanks.

I ordered the pickup from Musicians Friend IIRC....and the electronics and knobs from guitarfetish.
(R.S. Guitarworks have a nicer electronic upgrade kit...but I went the cheaper route.)

The difference between the stock Epi bridge pickup and the Iommi pickup is immense.
The Epi was mushy....indistinct.  The Iommi is powerful, yet crystal clear and articulate.
With the right amp settings you can absolutely NAIL the Black Sabbath sound.
Kudos to my Vox amp for making it easy....

On the first couple of Black Sabbath albums, did Tony Iommi use "Tony Iommi" pickups?

So, he didn't use the Tony Iommi pickups!
How in the world did he get "That Black Sabbath Sound"?

I thought that in order to get sound, you have to use Tony Iommi pickups?

I suppose he didn't use the Tony Iommi signature model SG either? And he STILL got "That Black Sabbath Sound"!
Amazing......
