Hi all,

Just stopping by to introduce myself to the forum. I am in the very early stages of learning to play. Still debating on going through the trouble of getting lessons. A little too much going on and that would just add to it. I have been dabbling with upgrading a used Stratocaster that I got a good deal on.

I am a new SG Special owner about 6 hours and counting. I went to the guitar store to purchase a new Epiphone Les Paul Special II that was listed on clearence for $109. It sounded like a bargain to me but don't know much about the Epiphones in general. Couldn't find it in stock after scouring all over the place. Store people had no clue either. Oh well, I seen the SG on a floor stand by the used wall. That cherry red really stands out in the crowd. I kind of circled around a bit but it kept calling my name. It only has one tiny little indention in the wood below/left of the bridge. I'm sure it would raise up with a little TLC if one wanted to tackle it. I did notice that the action seemed quite high and put it back down to check out some of the newer model Les Pauls and SG's. I was called over again and said why not after looking over the neck for any repair jobs that might have been done. I was still at the $109 price point. The checkout clerk had the tech lower the action. He was also adjusting the neck/bridge/pickups and doing a tune while I was looking at some cases close by. Out the door I went with a SG and accoustic case.

Not sure if it will let me post a picture but I'll try. The picture would not show in the preview so I guess the post count will have to go up.

Welcome to the Asylum.

If you wanna try to learn "in house" I'd suggest getting a copy of Rocksmith 2014 (now "Rocksmith Reloaded" after an update) It's a lot of fun and there's plenty of songs with a constantly expanding DLC catalog. It's available on PC, PS3/4 & XBOX 360/ONE.

Welcome. Congrats on the purchase.
As far as learning, youtube is your friend. All genres and levels are available. Get some kind of youtube downloader so you can save lessons you want to keep. Video DownloadHelper for Firefox is the one I use. ALPlayer and VLC can loop sections. VLC can slow them down if needed. All free stuff.
Good luck and have fun on your journey

Seconded. I've played casually for ten years, and Rock smith has made me loads better in two weeks.

Really? I've come across it of couple of times on steam thinking it was just a glorified Guitar Hero that semi-teaches you to play. Is it really that good?

Oh and welcome to ETSG SRX700 :h5:

I will look into it. I hope it doesn't entail getting another guitar because I'm a little swamped at the moment. These things are breeding like rabbits. lol

I was getting videos off from Justin Guitar and finally ordered the dvd out of necessity. My wifi went out for a bit and I didn't want to keep moving the computer up and down the steps. The stuff was free but I donated anyway. Sometimes I'm a good fellow!

Thanks everyone!

I tried multi quoting for another post but it only takes the last one. I will have to check out the display settings because this is a little different than other forums I'm on.

I was going to add that the first time I plugged the SG in, I was amazed how loud it is at the low end on the volume dial. That is coming out of a Fender G-DEC Junior. I think the guitar tech might have these strings a little close because I get some buzz on the low E on occasion.

Yeah really. I'm a lot more comfortable moving scales around the neck. I also figured out I've held my pick wrong the whole time.

No special guitar needed, the Rocksmith "games" work with any electric.

I will check that out after the MLK holiday. Like a fool I signed up for 12 hour night shift. Doesn't give much time for playing with guitars. :-(

Rocksmith has had a recent update that fixed one very annoying problem - not picking up notes correctly. Since the update, it has become much more enjoyable.

Just be aware that you want to protect the Rocksmith cable as much as possible. The cable was out of stock last year and I could not get it online anywhere in the EU or the US. Plugging the cable into a booster pedal and then plugging in the guitar into that was the preferred approach and will extend the life of the cable. Before the update, the booster pedal helped Rocksmith pick up notes more accurately and I still like to use it sometimes for bass.

Rocksmith does have a few lessons, but I have not done that many. Personally, I prefer using Youtube or Artistworks for the lessons and using Rocksmith to practice songs. It is a great tool to practice playing whole songs, but it does give a little too much leeway with regards to timing.

Edit: Should clarify that I needed to wait 6 weeks for my cable - rereading my post it looked like it was out-of-stock for the whole year.

The cable gets a bad rap, typically from LP users who practice on the couch. Bending the cable sharply at the jack isn't good for any cable not just the Rocksmith cable. In my case, having an SG and preferring 90° cables I bought a Hosa 90° adapter and never had an issue even though they tell you not to.

Of course proper cord winding techniques will extend cable life as will not letting your pets chew it........ It's not that big of a deal. Be an adult. Treat your equipment with care and respect and you'll be fine.

I have always taken care of my regular guitar cables, but sooner or later the connection at the 1/4" plug will break - that is with cables that terminate in 90° plugs. They can usually be resoldered, but it is a hassle, and sometimes I'll just buy a new cable.

I did not have any issues with the Rocksmith cable to date, but it has never even been fully uncoiled. When I bought Rocksmith on Steam, there were just no cables available. Rather than risk damaging the cable and sitting with the same problem, I just used a pedal and one of my regular cables. Booster pedals are great if Rocksmith has issues picking up notes, but any pedal with a bypass will do.

Even if I was not concerned with the Rocksmith cable breaking or Rocksmith not picking up all notes, I would still use the setup. Why? Because having a 6 ft cable allows me to move around while rocking out! :dude:
