Hmmm ... this looks like a very intentional but not happy at all burn.I think that instrument was in a house fire.

my sense of scam seems to scream:
RUN, DON'T WALK AWAY FROM DEALS
INVOLVING GUITARS OWNED BY DRAGONS.
I think that instrument was in a house fire.
Difficult to strip the poly from an Epi, isn't it?
I'd pass, there are so many great
guitars for sale that are no more and
no less than they seem.
Maybe they were trying to remove the poly like on a FenderBased on the signature "thumbprint" heat spots on it, I'd say someone used a portable blowtorch on it. Many spots are visible where the person kept the flame on it longer than on other areas. Using a Bic lighter for the effect wouldn't be feasible.
Those spots where it's all the way to the woodgrain shows the various angles he was holding the flame, too.
Could not agree more. I was just assuming that mess in OP was some kind of accident like a burn from 115 degree heat or something.I personally have never understood the idea of "relicing". Trashing a beautiful guitar! Of course owning a guitar that belonged to a noted guitarist that has some "honest" wear would be cool!
