what holds the pickup in position. my neck pickup is closer to one edge than the other. i will take it to bits and have a look at the weekend. but if there are people with any advice
It is a tiny bit off... The pickup is mounted by the height adjustment screws on either side, with a spring between the pickguard and pickup to keep tension. It really looks like the pickguard was drilled about 1mm off from center, which will be virtually impossible to repair since the new hole would overlap the old by half or more. That or the pickguard opening is off and the pickup is actually straight... At least it's crooked with the treble side receiving slightly more treble and the bass side more bass!
Unless it really irks you or throws your harmonics off in some way, I would probably leave it alone- a new pickguard may help unless the whole guard is off in some way.

To answer your question the two screws/springs at each end of the pickup hold it in place. Is the top of the pickup level with the pickguard? If not you can wedge some foam under one side to level it.
