I know, it's outdated. But I use a POD for my live sound. I hate the clean tones on it, though: anyone else use one and have tips to get a sweet sounding clean that cuts through the band?

i don't know much about the 2.0. Running direct to PA or in front of an amp?

my favorite models for cleans on the HD500 are the fender blackface and hiwatt 100

I battled with the Pod 2.0 tones for several years. NEVER found the "sweet spot." You can still find (although few and far between) user settings online. Gotta do some deep googling. Also, if you have Midi cables you can download custom patches straight to the Pod via Line6's website.

Are you using a modern scooped mids tone? If so you may never get a clean tone that sounds good in a mix.

In front of an amp, either a Fender DeViller or this retro Yamaha I recently had rewired.

I don't understand this question, probably because I'm a tone dummy -- what's a modern-scooped-mids-tone?

Yeah, I've downloaded tones. They sound great in headphones and not as great through my amp.

London, new hearing aid project - exciting
The secret with a POD is that you should not play it through a guitar amp. It has all its sounds built in, and it is designed for use with something Hi Fi - a house PA, or a domestic Hi Fi amp. I have a POD XT, and its clean sounds are brilliant.

Do you find you keep the levels on it low and bring the volume up on the house system instead? I've been finding that that helps somewhat... just trying to figure out if it's go-time to invest in a new pedal setup or not...

In the 70's the guitar players had lots of mids.

by the later 80's and 90's metal players used "scooped mids".

Compare tones.

Aaaah. Yeah, I'm not a metal guy at all. I like a big full tone a la Death Cab For Cutie or Wilco. Mostly playing indie rock.

I had a Pocket Pod and could never get it right. I traded it to a friend and he seems to like it but he is better with computers than me

You can plug your POD into the amp via the headphones jack. I have done that. You can also try the "AIR mode" switch on the top of it. I think it was AIR? That changes the output type. Try using the effects return as an input, that bypasses the amp's preamp stage and uses just the volume. If not, find a nice neutral clean channel setting on your amp using the standard amp input.
