I've realized something that I'd like.

An SG body with those Les Paul low-impedence pickups.

Cross this:

With this:

Do a bit of updating on the wiring, particularly that decade switch, and I'd have a great playing "hi-fi" guitar.

I owned a Les Paul Recording...it was too heavy to even sit with, your leg would loose circulation!

I jumped the reservation!
David I had a '77 LP Recording model some years ago. The walnut type at that. As I remember it had two output jacks on it. I liked it, but then later I sold it or traded it, I can't recall. The idea of building one with a SG as the host is different. I may still have a schematic for the old LP Recording if you're interested I'll hunt it up and find a way to get it to ya....

Thanks but I have them. I'm not sure where to get the pickups! It's not like they were so popular Gibson sells them like P90's and 57's.

Was the guitar an SG? :naughty:

And David, I LOVE your idea! Where can I get one?

I am really working on this....this could be an ideal jazz guitar, and Terry Kath played one of those LP Recordings too, so it can rock with those pickups.

So far I have not yet been able to find either original nor reproductions of the pickups, so I'm stuck right now until I find that essential ingredient.

re les paul street signs... I wish I had snapped a pic but was driving and didn't have camera ready to go. Oh and it was a LP although if they had used an SG that would have been waaaaay cooler :)

back on topic... please do report back and tell us what happens Dave. I don't have any leads for you on the pickup but I'd shoot an email to stewmac if I were you. Those guys are a wealth of knowledge about guitars and unlike so many companies these days... they are happy to help fellow guitarists even if it doesn't lead to a direct sale. That's why I always am happy to give referrals to them... great bunch of guys and really well run business.

Pretty rockin' tone for that model guitar - see, it can be done.

It was still too heavy!

Smitty, that's an option, but it may be more like the EMG low z pickups than like the Les Paul pickups.

Still it's a start, along with getting money together to actually do this.

And any SG or SG type guitar I'd use would get routed as needed, I have no qualm with hacking up gear if that's what a mod needs. I'm no collector. So I would make the cavity fit, same as i did when I converted a basic Epi G copy into one w/ P90's. Have chisel - will carve cavity.

Hmmmm. Got a schematic. I've got a few SG's being build down in the dungeon.

Wow, a schematic for one of the low Z Les Paul Personal, Recording, etc. pickups?

Oops, I'm sorry. One of tthose times when incorrect punctuation kills you. It should have said "Got a schematic?" As in, do you have one, or know where to get one? Unfortunately, I dont ever remember ever seeing one in all the usual places for wiring diagrams.

Yes, I do have the wiring diagrams - it's those pickups that are hard to find.
