SG II (again)

Looks like I timed my question badly. Transplanting it to the new board...

Has anybody played a SG II? What do the mini-hums on it sound like? I already have a 61 RI and I'm looking for a different sound.

Never played one, but I should imagine that mini 'buckers (a la Firebird) will sound awesome on the SG... I am a big fan of the 'Birds and love that "brighter humbucker" tone they can deliver... I guess that the SG II will be similar ...only a bit more ergonomic to play!

Thanks, Strange Brew. The mini-hums on the SG II look a little different. They appear to have plastic covers instead of the chrome ones on a Firebird. Maybe they're the same inside, but I haven't been able to find any info on them.

Its a brighter sound than a 57classic / paf / 490

Think more "Firebird" than traditional SG. Saying that... they do sound pretty nice. Very bright and lively... not Stratlike not p90like... a tone their own.

Well, my 98 SG Deluxe has the mini's and CB is correct, but it still definitely sounds like an SG....but different...more like a FG instead of an SG....yea, that's it 8) .

Well, with plastic covers, the mini's should sound like they have no covers at all?

The bar pole piece makes em bright, as well as just being smaller. I dont think the cover does much to the tone, but if anything would brighten it more.

hmm, i thought a metal cover would be inclined to give less treble.. ??

It does, so a plastic one should be brighter.

I know this is slightly off-subject, but could the metal covers have a sheilding effect? i'm not sure to what extent this would apply to HB's, and of course you know i've got the MM in mind here...

SG II yes I have played a few and I can tell u the pickups on it are just about the same as the 57 on the 61 reissue. 8) Problem is they like to become microphonic and those "cool " economically viable plastic pickup covers were one way that gibson was cutting back on materials and using cheaper methods the chances of the microphonic squeal prob most popular in P-90s are smaller but the pickups may still develop the problem man the seventies was a really shaky period for gibson in general but it is still an sg so good luck hope this helps :)
