Strap locks?

Bought my first Gibson last week (SG standard, natural burst) and am absolutely thrilled with it except for one thing. The strap buttons are TERRIBLE! I had a set of Schaller locks thrown in with my purchase because the guitar fell off during my test drive (didn't make it to the floor). When I went to install them, I was VERY uncomfortable with the depth that the screw had to go into the neck position, so I chickened out until I could ask around. Is it safe to drive a screw in the neck position that goes DEEPER than the original?

How much longer? You can always go to your local hardware store and get a shorter screw. Option B is to grind the head down on the original or shorter replacement screw so it fits inside the strap lock button. Got Dremel? :)

i also just got my first Gibson (an SGX) and i definetly need strap locks. Can anybody tell me the BEST kind to get???? I really need them as my strap has come off twice just while standing normally.

What I've done somtimes, is taken a fairly large-sized washer, and put it between the button and the strap. The washer is too wide for the strap to slip off, so it should work.

Edit: But yeah, Schaller's are your best choice. Your best bet is to go to a Hardware store and buy a shorter screw, or just cut/file/dremel it down. Good Luck :)

I used to swear by those little black plastic things, but after losing my tenth one, I realized that it's cheaper to just get some Schaller's.

Now, I haven't thought about that either, as I have yet to install mine. Will that screw be too long??!!

I use the Schallers too.  Mine had the same length screws in it when I changed them out.  What's the difference in screw length?  I wouldn't feel secure with a short one. Schallers work!

I used to use straplocks on all my gtrs but I gave up on them a couple years ago...now I buy a $.05c washer at the hardware store, that fits over the original gtr knob, but won't slide over the knurl. this stays nice & flush at the heel of an SG, and holds the strap on permanently

I just buy a nylon strap for all my gtrs & it stays on, *no* chance of the gtr falling off

plus straplock rattled & drove me nuts...

I don't like to mess with those strap buttons on my new SG so I just get a couple of those cheap black plastic Dunlop things. So they don't get lost they have little eyelets on them that are perfect for this locking nylon strapping that you can get at Home Depot or similar store. Make a tiny slit with a razor at the ends of the guitar strap to run the strapping through and attach them to the strap and you're done. Problem solved cheaply and you haven't messed with your guitar. I've used that metal Schaller system before and they're okay on Fenders but on my Les paul they always grind and wear away and sometimes have to be replaced. On the neck joint of an SG this system might tend to poke you in the gut. :-X

Well I did it with an Ibanez IC400... but this is a Gibson, not some POS Ibanez lol... I would NOT do that especially if the screw goes really deep!! Just go to your local hardware store and buy new screws... that should work fine

Hi everybody,
i 've just bought a new SG Standard and when i've tried to put Schaller strap locks on it i've found 2 things. First is that the original lower screw is larger than the Schaller one. I've used the schaller, and, though it is smaller, it seems to tight the button pretty well. Do you think it is dangerous to have a screw in a hole that is slightly bigger?
The other thing is that the rear screw is just identical as the schaller, so i've used the original one, but is doesn't tight, and the button keeps moving...... :-\

I had the same problem with my SG and jsut bought slightly larger screws. It worked/works like a champ

I've just finished installing the strap locks. For the rear one i've used the original gibson screw and now it fits perfect. For the other hole i've used the toothpick trick and it seems to work pretty well!!
I think strap locks are a must in a guitar (and specially in a SG)

Here's something that I do to all my SG's, that always gets people excited, hehehehehehe. I put the strap button on the horn, because I can't hold an SG with the button in the back. SG's fit like a glove this way! :)

I think they are as well. I mean, it's not a huge alteration, if that's what people are worried about.

I've had so many scary experiences with those little black ones. The middles pop out, and then they fall off, and then you play a set without knowing its not there. Ever had the strap fall off the rear peg, and have the neck almost hit the ground? Scary, scary stuff.
