Strangely, I prefered the sound he had during the old Sabbath albums when his setup was a lot simpler than this.

Didn't Iommi use an SG Special with P90's on the first few Sabbath albums? I wonder what amps he used?

I wonder what amps he used?

He used Laneys and a treble booster in the early years. I think he used a Rangemaster treble booster. He used Marshall Super Leads on occasion (I believe he used the Marshalls on Sabotage), but he's been a Laney guy most of his career.

I find that the Rangemaster I built (set on the 'fullrange' setting) nails the OLD Sabbath tone through a Marshall.  I can get the Dio years Sabbath tone with a Tube Screamer.  As for the new stuff...well, I like Iommi (the new stuff w/Hughes was cool) but I wouldn't want to copy his (new) tone.

I've seen him using an Orange in the studio Ironman video.  I think BW said that he used a Strat for the first album.

Really!? Wow, that's interesting in that I can get just about an identical sound with an SG Special, a 67' Deluxe Reverb and a good stomp box. This reminds me of my surprise when I first heard that Led Zep's first album was all Telecaster.

When you run through a Germanium fuzz (Rangemaster on fullrange setting cranked or a Fuzz Face) most guitar's tend to sound nearly the same regardless of the amp used (within 'reason').

Also, FWIW Iommi did NOT use a Strat on the 1st album. According to this month's GuitarOne (where Iommi is on the cover) he used the Strat for part of Wicked World at which time the guitar crapped-out and he switched to an SG for recording the rest of the album.

Ironman video Page used a Tele a lot in the studio all throughout his career with Zeppelin, and as Blood said, the first two albums were completely Tele.

I guess I was wrong then, but I thought I remembered BW saying he used one.

BW did indeed say that. personally, i had heard that the strat pups crapped out just before they started recording, and the only lefty guitar he could get at short notice was the SG. turned out he prefered the tone and stuck with it.

probably only Tony could tell us for sure...

Iommi used Strats before Sabbath recorded the first album. He bought the SG as a second guitar and used it when the pickup on the Strat did indeed crap out as they began recording Black Sabbath. He fell in love with the heavier tone and never looked back. O0

He does in this month's GuitarOne magazine. It also says he traded the Strat for a saxophone.
