Top adjust tune-O-matic bridge on 82 SG Std

What are your opinions on the top adjust tune-o-matic bridge ? Is it a candidate for an upgrade ? Or does have anyone have experience and are they any good ?

I don't like that gawky bridge .. me, I like the smaller traditional ones ...probably has the inserts for the posts too! Is that what they call the "nashville Bridge" ? I think so ... Boys?

thanks for your input. this is called the top adjust bridge since the adjusting screws are on the top, not the side as in the Nashville tune o matic. I may consider replacing this top adjust and use a regular Nashville one since this one seems kind of cumbersome in comparison. I just wondered if you guys knew of any inherent problems with this bridge since Gibson only used them for a short time, i wondered if maybe there was found to be some problems with intonating them or such. thanks, Mike

That definately looks like a Schaller. If so you can get a Nashville to fit it just by threading in the nashville studs and putting the bridge on top.

First, yes this is the bridge that is on the $500 1982 SG Standard. I have no reason to doubt that it is original factory equipment on this guitar seeiing as how all else, (possibly including the strings!) seem to have been original and dead stock on the guitar. The catalogue picture you sent showing the sales literature from the early 80's SG Standard showed the same bridge on it. Called the "top-adjust tune-o-matic" the actual bridge saddles appear to be made of a different metal than the rest of the bridge and the adjustment screws are located on top, rather than on the side of the bridge. There appears to be a "3-way" mounting sysytem in place on the bottom of this bridge where you can select any of 3 angles to install it over the poles, from slant treble, totally even, and slant bass side depending on which of the 3 grooved mounting holes you line up over the stud pieces. The poles are located in the exact place and the exact same normal Gibson posts as the ones needed to use a regular "nashville tune-o-matic" on. This is why I am asking if anyone feels it would be a worthy change to make. These saddles have seen some wear and I am not to crazy about how they feel compared to the more common regular tune-o-matic. (These seem to have a slightly higher profile above the surface of the bridge compared to the ones on our other SGs.) I just thought I would check for any opinions or if anyone has heard or knows anything about this particular bridge, good or bad.Mike

p.s. the $500.00 Guitar downgraded to a $440.00 because the case got sold for 60.00

Worthy of a change...

Well if the bridge is original (it probably is), then why change it? Is it causing harm? Unless there's a problem, just keep it!

When string change time comes around please take some pics of the bottom and sides of that bridge. it is a curiosity fer sure!
