Does anyone have a strong opinion about the Ibanez Tube Screamer 808 versus the
TS 9? I've read Dave Hunter's book about effects, and he basically said they're both good
and some people like one, some the other etc... Do people pay twice the price just to have something 'cool' on their pedal boards, or are there real differences that you guys know
about, the kind you want for your tone, or don't want. that's what I want to know.

Check out YouTube. There are several TS9 vs TS808 vids on there albeit they are usually hawking their mods and showing the differences in their products. check out the modded TS10s on there as well. The TS10 can be bought much cheaper but do seem to sound good.

I bought 2 TS9s and modded them to a 808.
I was lucky to find one of the few original and true spec chips.
It does sound a little smoother and less distorted and IMHO better for blues.
I gave one to a friend for his birthday and kept the other.

I have mixed feelings on the 808 vs the TS9. I have played thru old spec TS9 pedals and thought they sounded better than new TS9 or new TS808 ones. Don't know what it was about the old pedal but I liked it.
