I'm sure there's some truly beautiful DIY routing underneath that pickguard...

I'm betting it had a input jack related injury (common enough on front mount jacks)

& that plate covers over a mess the owner couldn't stand to look at.

I agree it looks like a cover for a mess but the seller still thinks it's worth £249 including a bag of chips.

It things like this that remind me of an adage that has become a favorite of mine, 'One mans treasure is another mans pile o' pooh' er something like that.

First time I've seen two pickguards, first impression, I like the look of it.

Looks pretty good to me ...

Agreed. I mean a pickguard there is pretty useless. But it looks cool.

 Excuse me a sec...

Ahhh, that's better.

OK, so where were you guys when the 1971-72 SG Standard got a face lift & turned into this...

The SG Deluxe??

or the similarly front control plated Custom??

These guitars took so much heat & contemptuous criticism that they only lasted 2 years before felt forced into going back to the original 61 type of appearance with some slight overall variations, but hey, that front mounted control plate was history baby!

While I love the look of that '73 Standard (above) I too also love the 71-72 SG Deluxe as well. They are great playing, beautiful sounding sturdy feeling instruments, & yes, I have one!
And her name is Belladonna.

In 71 I was getting married and other than the fact that my wife had a guitar and could knock out a tune I knew NOTHING of guitars. That ignorance lasted until a couple of years ago when I wanted a new challenge. I've come here 99% to gain knowledge and 1% to help when I can. Sorry I'm not a lifer, should I find a forum exclusively dedicated to the inexperienced?

No, not useless, I just figured it out ...
KEEPS FINGERPRINTS OFF THE WOODWORK. :D
Of course! Why did nobody think of it before? I guess covering the whole guitar body with a huge pickguard would be the solution to all our problems.

No walking on earth yet. And it was about 46 years before I bought my first electric guitar.

Not surprising...these half-moon-shaped plates look not nearly as badass as the one above.

Agree BUT back in the early 70's we thought silk body shirts and super big bell bottom trousers looked cool, hey I even had a porn star mustache. Think we should forgive the designers of that ugly second cover ;-)
