Bikes ? Oh the carbon, no no ... windsurfing booms. They are covered with a nice thin foam layer, which is perfect for protecting hanging headstocks.

Ahhh, I thought they were cut down handlebars.

Back in the 80s, there was a local shop that hung their guitars by their tuners: leather straps with slits for the tuners. The leather went on hooks. 30 years later and it still makes me cringe.

That's how Scott Grove (YouTube's Dr.Groovy) does some of his, only he uses zip ties instead of leather.
I don't get it, but then again I only have one ax so far.

What ? That'd work. Aren't tuner shafts made of metal ? You might untune the 2 tuners used, but that's all. This thing is not alive, it's not like you hung it from its ears or something.

Not 2, he only uses 1. It just seems sketchy to use something held on by friction or a tiny screw. I'm referring to the knob.

My Gibson Sonex 180 weighed about 150,000 lbs. I bought it there out of the box. If they hung it like that, it may have broke loose, crashed through to the center of the earth causing a singularity and thus ending life as we know it.

I can't hang axes. We have a playful furball that likes to run around at Mach 2 then jump up and kick plant off walls right about the height of where the guitar body would rest if I were to hang them. I'd hate to think of my guitar falling and hurting the cat or being damaged, so drawers or TSA cases are where mine will live.

I've asked that question to all luthiers I've met. They all said the best way to keep your guitars is through the wall hangers. Specially if you are leaving your guitar in it for a long period.

It seems forces would apply in the less damaging direction.

These work well screwed in to a stud. About $1.50 at Walmart. Just make sure a pilot hole is drilled. They have a rubberized coating. I don't know if its nitro safe or not. I've got a poly finished epiphone and an old acoustic hanging on them. All the rest are in a homemade rack kind of like a gun rack.

i'm under the impression that standing up or on it's back is ok but lateral across the neck isn't...

He's a strange dude.

Personally if I was going to hang my guitars on a wall I'd use Hercules hangers. I've used their stands for years with no problems for the nitro finishes on my Gibsons.

I like my Ultimate stand. It gets brought out sometimes for dinking around with Rocksmith, but mainly I just set the case next to me on the couch.

My main guitar gets played daily, and I don't have enough stands so 99% of the time it just rests against the couch.

:wow::shock::wow::shock::ohno:

That wouldn't fly in my house. The furballs would knock 'em down causing damage to themselves or the ax. SWMBO also prefers I "put away my 'toys'".

Make sure the rubber pads on the hangers are lacquer-friendly.

This is absolutely correct! I have seen brand new Gibsons with tacky spots on the underside of the headstocks where the hanger makes contact. These were new guitars with fresh finishes so I don't know if it still happens after that guitar ages for a few years. I use the Hercules stands with the locking hanger but I wrap gauze around the two points of contact. The Hercules hangers have a nice locking aout locking /unlocking system. They are worth the extra money.
