After waiting all summer for the parts to get here, my order from Warmoth finally arrived. Then as luck would have it, my camera died as soon as I pulled it out to take pics and I left the charger at the cottage, so I'm stuck with webcam pics for now.

I ordered a carved top Soloist body with a maple top and mahogany back, and a Strat neck with a Wizard contour. I'm going to stain the top trans black, and the back black and then spray with shellac. The neck is going to be Tung oiled.

Well..as you can probably tell by the routing its going to have a Floyd, and two 'buckers, a Dimarzio PAF pro in the neck and a Dimarzio X2N in the bridge, three way switch with a coil tap for the bridge pup, single volume knob, no tone, and a push button momentary kill switch like Buckethead.

Out of interest, how much do you think the finished thing will cost compared to a similarly speced guitar? Ie. Have you saved money by getting the parts and putting it together yourself, or would it have been cheaper to get a production line model?

looks good Zep! make sure you read up on staining and finishing (try projectguitar.com and the reranch site) before starting! and when sanding use a solid block you don't want any dips and bumps on that finish!

also might I suggest a coating of Tru-Oil on top of the Shellac on the body, it will make it much more harder wearing. keep us posted!

Thanks Dan, I've been practicing on scrap pieces of wood all summer, I'm gonna do this properly.

It'll end up costing around the same as a Prestige Ibanez RG, around $900. I bought the pickups used off of craigslist though, so I saved about $100 there. But I figured that I might as well do it exactly the way I want it and end up with a completely custom guitar.

Cool!

So how much will it cost?

I'm considering making a tele, but i'm not sure if it would be cheaper to just buy a MIM and switch out the pups...
[/quote]

Tele bodies range from $160-$220 depending on the wood, and necks from $157-$383, all unfinished. plus hardware electronics etc.

Re: Warmoth Soloist build

Major finishing done this weekend. All I need to do is drill a couple of holes and clear coat the body and install the hardware, and the neck is completely finished. hopefully I'll be shredding away by the end of the week.
