I saw this guitar for sale but I'm not sure if it's basically a Custom Shop SG or a dolled up '61 Reissue. Maybe you guys can help:

Either way it seems like a good deal.

its obviously not a dolled up '61 reissue.
its just a Gibson SG Custom, but from the color im guessing it was either some special limited run or made just for the jap market.

I'm not meaning to discount what you are saying, but why do you think it isn't a custom shop guitar then? Doesn't Gibson just make one offs or say 20 offs once in a while? It would be interesting to know what this one is. The color is so unusual that is seems like maybe it was just some regular production stuff out of the custom shop. It would be nice to be able to view Gibson's records, via a serial number look up service.

well, it is priced at $1799.
which makes it to be either a market priced SG Custom, or a under-priced Custom shop SG.
without a serial number yet, im inclined to go with the former as i assume shops would like to make money :p

i've also seen jap market only SG Customs with weird finishes like the one below.

When I visited the Custom Shop a few years ago there were many One off SGs on display and not just for the foreign markets. Take a look at the Gallery for the Custom Shop pics like the one below.

Aren't all Les Paul Customs made by the Custom Shop?

No. Custom is just a model designation like Special, Standard, Studio, etc.

I found one exactly the same listed on Ebay and it has a Custom Shop Serial number and logo on the back of the headstock. Interestingly, I believe those are '57 Classics.

I don't know how the lacquer got so cracked if it's only 11 years old though.

i dunno man...looks different to me.
apart from the obvious pickguard and neck filler plastic thingie being different colored, and what looks like nickel hardware rather than the gold in your first post...
the bridge on that ebay model is an ABR-1, whereas your first post looks like a nashville.

It's aged in the factory, according to the seller.

Wow yeah I missed all that. I just saw it on Ebay and didn't really compare the two.

I see now. I think they went a little overboard with the binding though...

Nice guitars. A few observations:
1. It might be aged at the factory but I've seen gold top Les Paul of similar age with similar cracking. In any case I wish Gibson would also age the headstock diamond and binding as they do on the Les Paul Customs. The whiteness of the headstock looks out of place when the rest of the guitar is aged e.g. white VOS SG Custom.
2. SG Customs were previously available from the regular production line with regular production serial numbers. Lately, all Gibson SG's are been made in the Custom Shop with appropriate serial numbers.
3. Current Custom Shop guitars have different build details including:

  • [li]Gap between the neck binding and the body just above the tenon plate.[/li]
    [li]Holly headstock veneer[/li]
[li]Standards have Burstbuckers. Custom SGs have '57s.[/li]
    [li]Thicker necks with a rounder profile[/li]
    [li]CTS pots and bumblebee caps[/li]

That's a limited run silver color on that SG Custom. I played one once. It may have been a 2002 model 'cuz I played it in 2004 and it was used then. They wanted $2300.00 for it. If that one is in good nick and has the case that's a fair deal at worst.

Whatever market it was made for or by what part of Gibson, that's a real beauty. Has anyone actually played it yet?
