“It's an extremely tight fit and a bear to get off. You can see where they probably oversprayed the finish. I've already gouged the plate twice trying to pry it off and I've been avoiding taking it off again lol. But it's obviously inevitable. So yes said:
Use a suction cup or a piece of tape folded so that it is an upside down “T” stuck to it so you can pull it out.
Please don’t pry it out, there’s no need to even if it’s a tight fit.

That does sound like a cold solder joint or ground issue.
Have you tried poking around in the control cavity, moving some wires around with a chopstick while plugged in?

That's next on the agenda! It's been behaving so I'm playing the crap out of it...
