I recently purchased an ebony SG standard. Its an awesome guitar but the back of the ebony finished neck gets sticky. I do not have this problem with any other guitar and of coarse no other guitar I own has a glossy ebony finish on the back. I polish the back of the neck and wash my hands before I play but yet, within two minutes My hand is sticking really bad.

No its not the polish because it was happenning before I polished it.

I am seriously considering using chalk on my hand or getting a resin bag. I am afraid of ruining the finish though.

Does anyone else have this problem or know a good remedy?

Thanks 8)

the sticky feeling on mine is gone, it took about a year of playing for it to start to go away
and i've had it for probably about 3 years now.

I had the problem.. it goes away

What helps is a dampish rag (not wet) And a good rubdown.. then with another very soft rag wipe it down till it shines.

it probably would yes, I think H2H allready adressed this issue and said that the finish still needs to cure which on Nitro is about a month, without playing that is! otherwise it will take longer and remember and uncured finish scratches very very easily.

My new sg's neck was a little sticky at first but I used a damp clean soft cotton towel to wipe it down. Then I wiped my hand on my forhead to get a little body oil and then rubbed my slightly oily hand on the neck. I know it sounds weird or slightly disgusting but it works well.

Thanks for the replies!!!
I too felt like the finish was uncured, mine is really sticky, I can hardly play it. Has anyone ever tried a little chalk on the hands or a bowlers resin bag?
I dont want to wait a year before i can glide on it. The fretboard , action and sound is so beautiful. It just feels so perfect except for the sticky neck :-\

i'd be afraid the chalk/powder would embed itself in the finish, but again, no real knowledge on it!

My 2003 SG-61 took a good 2 years. I wish I knew why. It is a weird, and unnecessary problem, IMO.

could there possibly be a mixture problem causing this? not enough catalyst? too much fish-eye killer? wrong reducer? even wrong paint used because they ran out of the good stuff?

Never put polish on the back of your neck, thats half your problem there !!..

I've noticed people also use WAY to much polish on there guitars. About a dime sized amout is all thats need per side..Less is more

I had this problem the first day, before polish.
I wonder if this problem is covered under the lifetime warrantee. Now that I know it is widespread I am kind of pissed off. I dont have this problem on any other 200-500 dollar guitar I ever owned in 20 years. Now that I finally bought a real Gibson guitar, I can hardly play it. I am going to have to learn to play like Jeff Healey!!!
