Special Platinums had silver pickguards and silver headstocks. ;) Silver pickup bobbins too!

All of those are pie in the sky prices. The platinum isn't that rare. People just aren't selling them much yet because they just got'em. ;D That blue teal flip-flop is rarer than the platinum model.
BTW GC had a limited edition sunset orange SG that was the same as the platinum SG except the orange body and neck. It had the platinum's pickguard, pickups and the silver front on the headstock.

My friend got a Platinum for like $750.00. Cool looking guitar, but the platinum paint makes the neck feel kind of rough. Not something I'd want to play regularly.

There are several things to think about when buying a guitar, finish being just a small one. Do you like the Gibson SG Special even if it doesn't have the pewter paint? If you just want a pewter SG you could just buy a Gibson SG Standard (in my opinion a better guitar) and have it painted pewter.

Also, the guitar you want is played by the lead singer and guitarist of Fall Out Boy. Now according to my girlfriend, (a fan of the band) he favors SGs. If the Pewter SG Special becomes his main guitar (or for that matter just his main gig guitar) look for the price to skyrocket as fans of the band will want the same guitar he plays. The exact same thing happened to the Ovation GP when Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Josh Homme's fans pushed the price of the guitar into the thousands.

The SG special itself is the entry model for Gibson's SG line, with current models going for $579.99 for a faded model at Guitar Center. However, if you want the exact same guitar that Patrick Stump plays, you'll also have to look at what changes he made to the guitar. If you look at the picture, at least one of the pickups has been modified. The bridge pickup has a cover, the stock Pewter Gibson SG Speical does not have pickup covers.

Cheers!

Wierd.
I watched them at Reading Festival 2 days ago and was trying to work out what he was playing. i figured it looked like a custom paint job gibson SG with the bridge pickup changed.
Sorta spoils all the magic doesn't it?

O .. and he also was playing what appeared to be a VOS Cherry SG with Maestro Trem.

And they did a cover of "Power of Love"! Ouch! (fair enough, they did it as a joke)

The guitars' 'guards really don't look like that in real life. They probably retouched the pics for the ads.
