I recently acquired an SG that I thought was a 62 reissue. After a closer look, I'm not sure what this is.
It has a stamp on the back of the headstock that says "promotional, not for resale". Some say that means it is a factory second and others say it is a guitar built by a Gibson employee for their personal use. It has the '57 Classic Humbuckers, Tune-O-Matic Bridge and Stop Bar tailpiece like an standard '62 reissue, but it has an ebony dot neck fingerboard and 3 knobs like an elite without the extra switch. Strange little critter. The serial number is 91231329 which looks like a '91 model, but there is nothing like this in the '91 catalog. I have pics if you need to see this jewel.

Thanks for your help.

I dont know what it is, but i say dont sell it. You can email gibson and give them photo's of it. The Gibson website has their email. They usually give you a responce in a day with good info.

Hope you don't mind - I changed your link to show the pics O0

Looks to me like a late 80s/early 90s SGSpecial, with p/up covers and a pickguard added

It is odd in that it looks more like a c.1988 Special model with the three knobs and switch. Those guitars usually had Kahlers and vivid colors and no pickguard. They had black covers on the pickups like EMG as well.

'90-'91 model SG Standards had the input jack on the edge like a LP and four knobs.

My guess is that it was made from earlier parts (maybe a warranty return?) at the factory and given away in a contest. :-\

My understanding on the "Promotional, Not for Resale" is that the instrument was either made as a give away or for display at a trade show.

[/quote] That would seem to make sense in this case since the abortion in the pictures looks nothing like any real Gibson SG I've ever seen (for retail sale since 1978, at any guitar show since 1981, and on any forum since 1998). It seems to make sense that it *might* be a "give away" of a trade show display model... since it's FUGLY and obviously NOT a popular version. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that this might be a.... <gasp>.... fake or bad copy or something worthy of a Gibson lawsuit???

^^ Troll Alert! ^^
Disrespecting Dcastle's guitar was not necessary. He asked for help not a critique.

Have we seen your collection yet? I like to use the phrase "Pick up the mirror, before you pick up the magnifying glass."

I'd like to know why it is that mr. dick has such a compulsion to pee all over everyone's cornflakes
. . . he never seems to have anything positive to say about anyone or anything except himself
. . . never anything really constructive or contributory

One would think that someone with such self-proclaimed vast knowledge and experience would seek to be an asset to the forum . . . an encouragement to younger and less experienced players . . . a sage to those seeking advice

SG Dick . . . why is it that you behave as you do? Did you come here just to bring misery, or do you have something worthy to offer? I would really like to know.

I really didn't mean to stir up a shitstorm over this old Gibson. It's not a fake. It's an odd ball for sure. I've been playing, buying and selling guitars for over 35 years. I love to find unusual instruments. This one is definitely one of those. To those who have helped....thank you very much. To anyone else....get a life.....opinions are like assholes.....everybody has one and every one but mine stinks. Thanks again for the help.

I enjoy playing this little jewel and showing it to interested parties. It's been a fun addition to my collection.

it wasn't you who stirred things up dcastle . . . we are unfortunately plagued with a few anti-social types who are unable to contribute anything but negativism, sarcasm and condescension

but don't let a few trolls ruin your view of this forum . . . you will find that the vast majority here are friendly and helpful

oh and WELCOME TO ETSG!!!
