I was told this is an SG-I. It has one Melody Maker pickup (small white single, covered) in the bridge, batwing type pickguard (slightly different), walnut finish, and vibrola trem. Is this an SG-I, and if so whay ear is this serial# from: 852810? Thanks.

What you have there seems to be a Melody Maker similar to this guitar http://www.everythingsg.com/adverts/1970 Melody Maker-D.jpg
a SG-1 looks like this (second from bottom) http://www.everythingsg.com/adverts/1973SG_ad.jpg
Skidshark has a '68 Melody Maker that looks similar to yours.
Does yours have a Volute like this (bottom pic)? http://www.everythingsg.com/adverts/1972 SG Details1.jpg
If not, it's a '69-earlier.
When you get a chance, look at the pots by taking off the back plate. There should be #s on the pots.Hopefully solder doesn't obscure them but there should be a code that reads 137-##-##.That should give you the date as 137-YY-WW.
Going to this link http://www.gibson.com/downloads/bluebook/GibsonSERIALNUMBERS.pdf
will tell that your guitar is of 1966 manufacture. The pic in the ESG catalogs section shows a MM with a different pickguard and headstock though. It could be a production anomaly though. http://www.everythingsg.com/adverts/catalog2.jpg

I don't have the guiatr, I am looking at buying it. Do you think $400 with the case shown is reasonable?

Offhand I'd say if it plays well and has no problems that would probably be fair.

Thanks for you help. By the serial number it appears to be a mid-70s, probably Melody Maker. Does this look like it has been modded, I've never seen an MM with just one pickup like that? I'm thinking of turning it inot an SG Jr. I want to take off the trem and replace the bridge with an adjustable Bad Ass or something, and of course a P-90 in the bridge. I looks like it is in very good condition for its age.

T, the pic you posted is that of a 67 MM. Notice the narrow headstock. The pic Ham posted has the wider "open book" style headstock. I can remember what year the changed headstock styles but what he has posted is a MM

The serial is also shown as a 66 range.

Hmmm, I did not see that. Seems like a pretty odd serialization method. So the only way to reaaly know is to look at the pots (assuming they are original)?

grab it it is a mid to late 60's single pup MM and while not very rare they are nice and do have a collectable value .. DO NOT mod it !! the fair market on that one is 450 to 700 depending on shape etc. so 400 is a good bargain ,,, the case shown is worth 50-75 alone as a used case if it is in good shape too

BW, if you look at the first link at the '70 MM you will see the wider HS.
Where's Skids when you need him! The pic I showed of the '67 is there because Hammy said something about never seeing a single pup MM.
I don't think that the MM was even made in '73-'75, at least in SG body. If it was, I don't think it would look anywhere near like the one Hambucker is wanting to buy.
HamBucker, if I were you I would take the back plate off anyway and look around. I think that the PG might be changed, but it's hard to tell since I don't have a pic of a '66.But '66 is the first year of the MM in SG body.
*This just in!* http://www.provide.net/~cfh/gibson.html#ship says that it could be a '66 or a '69! 1969 makes more sense actually because of the Walnut finish and the headstock is the same as the '70 in the ESG catalog.
