my singer has a 2007 honeyburst les paul. he lets me use it for a song every once in a while. it's awesome but doesn't feel as nice as the sg. i've been playing sg's for too long to turn back now! i'd just like to expand the stable and have a few different sounds. i got the humbucker sound in the faded, the "whatever those little black mini humbucker looking thingies" are in the sg III and the p94 in the "freewood" (called it that because all the wood was donated by different friends). i started playing an sg at 18 years old and am still in love at 41! they make me seem way cooler than i am!

  1. SGs and Strats were the main guitars of 60s
  2. Great sound
  3. Light weight
  4. Great looks
  5. We bond

SGs and Strats..Teles and Les Pauls...Gibson hollow bodies....

For me, there needs be nothing else. Those are all the electric guitars I'll ever need. Well, minus the Lesters for me!

While I spend more time with my SGs, Les Pauls are, happily, iconic necessities in the modern guitarist's tool kit . As a matter of complete disclosure and total transparency, I have a couple of which I'm pretty fond ;>)/.
The 2000 Silver Flake Epi standard is my favorite, in no small part because it weighs a scant 8.5 lbs . The black 2005 standard weighs a massive 11lb.10oz. The 2011 '59 VOS comes in at just over 9lbs . They all have unique voices, but for southern blues, the Silver Flake is most "Duane-like" and harmonizes best with other Gibson-Epis . I almost always carry one of these, an SG, my Dot and my Strat to gigs .

At the risk of sounding argumentative, I strongly disagree.
I have been playing professionally for 49 years and have
never owned a Les Paul and have never used one on a job.

I am not saying that they are not excellent guitars. They are
very good indeed but they are not an absolute "must have".
They do what they do very well but you can do it just as
well with a 335. The entire mystique is rediculously overblown
in my opinion.

They weigh too much.
They dig into my ribs.
The strap button is in the wrong place.
The................

Time to stop. It's becoming a rant now.
Apologies.

P.s. I should have added 335s to the list of 60s guitars. SGs are the underdogs (so overlooked) of the Gibson stable so they don't get the LP hype.

This is why I like SGs but then I like most humbucking Gibsons. (I recently boungt a custom shop flying v which sounds great yet quite different from my SGs)

Yes, 335s are versatile and make an excellent jazz box substitute . My Dot Deluxe vs is my favorite Kansas City blues axe and it makes the young girls crazy when we cover some John Lee...,but maybe you haven't played the right Les Paul or you have a real gritty bridge p/u on your 335 ? But for making contrails on stage for hours on end, nothin' beats a well set-up SG. It's a big tent with room for all . BTW, For 25 years, the only axe I carried was a 50s ES225TD, 2 P90s and an ES330 trapeze tailpiece and floating bridge . When it was taken from me, I expanded my tastes and range of styles . I had been playing in a "smooth jazz " trio for a number of years and shortly after losing my axe, the vocalist passed away and I gravitated back to my blues roots . At the same time my bass player recruited me into his Country band, so a strat and a dot deluxe seemed like good replacements . My cherry red g400 soon joined the armoury, followed in close step by the silver LP . I love 'em all ( But damn, those LPs are too dadblasted heavy) ;>)/

SG's may be the "underdog" - but Gibson sold ****loads of them over the decades.

I too confess a fondness for any 2 humbucker Gibson.

Les Pauls are indeed iconic - but not strictly needed if you have an SG, 335, etc. even my Es-175 can rock hard with that type of sound, and although none of these guitars sound the same in a quiet studio room, on stage almost any Gibson with an HH setup can be fairly interchangeable.

Another repeated issue for those of us like me that like Les Pauls but never could keep any because of the weight issue that was not there with a hollowbody or an SG.

I think I said it before on this thread - the SG is so comfortable and versatile that it has not yet been surpassed by Gibson's R & D dept.

Heck, even Fender isn't much better - the only real updates have been G & L's stuff, which really aren't game-changers just refined updates to Leo's original creations.

Sorry to be a pain in the ass about honestly examining guitar design.

I bet those all sound and play great - but the lightest one is what I want a BASS to max out at, and 9-11+ lbs. is just beyond my ability to deal with on a gig.
I want a guitar to weigh 6.5-7.5 lbs. Hence my choices.

Cheeky MOnkey!

Why the "F" NOT an SG???? Is the question I ask......

I have rarely come across anyone who has tried one who didn't love it.
I have converted many a friend and coworker from other instruments......luring many with the simple cheap thrills of an Epi SG Special....then its "I never play my Fender Strat anymore I always grab the SG" And "I took the SG you sold me to a gig last weekend and it was awesome!!!"

Oh I have so much fun with that. :applause:

Well let me set the story straight on why I chose an SG. Once upon a time there was a man named Arthur Lee that hung around with a guy named Jimi Hendrix. Jimi and Arthur were planning on recording an album together just before Jimi died. I was a die hard Strat fan because of Jimi, but Arthur was the reason I turned to the SG. Arthur has joined Jimi in the next world, but their music is still is enjoyed and to this day I am still very good friends with Arthur's widow, Diane. Here is a link to a song called The Everlasting First featuring Jimi Hendrix playing the lead intro.

Why the SG? A million reasons, really.

  • A friend I trust told me that it was a really versatile guitar.
  • I thought it looked cool.
  • gta-patti.jpg

  • I found an Epiphone model that had a lot of features I was sort of lusting for.
  • Pelham Blue.
  • Tony Iommi, Angus Young, many many more...

I have never owned a real strat or tele but it seems that everybody has one so I opted to go with the SG shape because it looks different than the run of the mill strat. Don't get me wrong I would love to own an american strat or tele someday and would love a real gibson sg but my Eppi SG400 is just fine for me.
