Evan Dando with his cherry red small guard SG in the early 90's. His use of unusual chord shapes are still great to this day.

I went to my local guitar store, borrowed £750 from my older brother and bought an SG they had hanging up. It sounded incredible and turned out to be a 1968 SG Standard, all original. Neck like a tree trunk.

I still have it to this day.

This is my first post so be kind, the main players who sparked an interest in SG's for me were Buck Dharma, Frank Marino, Carlos, Pete, Tony and maybe some early Clapton but skimming through old Music Emporium catalogs is what really got the juices flowing

For me, in the middle seventies, it was Buck Dharma with
Blue Oyster Cult. Another totally unique band and sound.
I like a lot of other '70s music too, but much of that was
Les Paul driven.
Definitely that band, but for me, it wasn’t just the criminally underrated Buck Dharma—- but also THIS guy, playing THIS particular guitar:

Add to that the usual Sabbath/Iommi and Angus/AC/DC black SGs, and it’s no surprise that what I desperately wanted as my first electric guitar back in the early 80s!

Oh yeah and a certain Judas Priest MTV concert I watched about a bazillion times too— Glen Tipton and HIS black SG being the 4th inspiration— still image from it:

what a fun thread to buzz through like a buzz saw!

we could re-direct the flow here and discuss:
artists who make you glad you chose to play an SG...
we are all part of something cool IMHO.

For modernistic players:
Here's kudos for Dweezil Zappa, Samantha Fish and Derek Trucks
as well as Nancy Wilson.
...in addition to the ones I posted earlier. This thread is a great reminder
of a lot of great music. Here's one I didn't know about until recently:

So many great SG players I love, but seeing two, in particular, wielding them live (repeatedly) led me to try out a Cherry Red '61 Reissue & that was all it took.

~Jeff Tweedy (Wilco, Jeff Tweedy Band)
Jeff plays lots of different guitars, but the electric he plays with he most is an SG.

~Derek Trucks (Tedeschi-Trucks Band)
While Derek does play some other guitars, he plays an SG the vast majority of the time.

I have seen that guitar in person... unfortunately not with the original owner :( My friend has an SG that is the next serial number away from Jimi's white SG!! It is a one off custom ordered in black which looks stunning. It also has factory Grovers. To think it was made along side Jimi's by the same people probably form the same trees is pretty wild. I've played it and it just feels soooo good in the hands. The amplified sound is magic too.
