Hey guys,
First post (occasional lurker), wanted to get some feedback on the 2019 SG Standard.

I don't have an SG, they've been in the back of my mind for years, though.

The one I played now has totally infatuated me. It spoke to me like no other SG has. I'm considering it seriously now.

My questions are:
What are the chances of this particular one being 'the one', and not feeling the same as maybe a 2017/18 Standard, second hand, etc.
The neck is perfect, it's just thick enough, frets and binding are great.
Its perfectly balanced, no dive.
Sounds amazing, resonant, expressive.
The nitro is also super silky, the nicest I've felt on a Gibson, tbh.

I want to go play a 61 Standard to see if that neck isn't too thin, cause I like the other specs on it. Maybe the tribute too (if the neck is as good).

This would be a big purchase for me, so just checking if I should look around at any other options?
Also wondered if anyone else has been wowed by these? Maybe I just found a great example.

Welcome!

If you look on the main site, it starts off describing the 2019 SG Standard as having a Slim Taper neck and then on the same page under the Neck specs it is listed as Rounded.

I recently handled one myself out of curiosity and the one in question was a Slim Taper, not Rounded which are chunky with more shoulder.

It’s always best to try before you buy as the same model and year will have slight variances in neck profile since the sanding on the necks are done by hand.

My suggestion is to grab it, pay for it and run.

When people ask us which SG to by, my answer is always to buy the
one that wows you. Small differences in year class and neck shape,
decorations or lack of decorations... these things mean nothing compared
to the feelings you describe.

You don't get those feelings from just any guitar. When you do get
them, that's your guitar. Do NOT allow some other gorilla to get his
hairy paws on it. Buy that one, and ignore the rest.

If you go back to where you played that one, and somebody else has
already taken the lady home, keep looking. it isn't the "features" of the
instrument you should seek. It's that feeling that you've just
experienced and described. It doesn't happen every week, sometimes
it only happens once in a lifetime. Pay attention, and trust your own
sense of if.

You could play a whole rack of new Gibsons and not find "the one."
Which you have seemingly found, and left hanging there.
Go back NOW, take that guitar home, and play the hell out of it.

As you might guess by my post above, I too have experienced
"bonding" with an instrument. I went through denial, and disbelief,
and attraction, and fortunately, I listened to my heart and pulled out
my master card and pounced, after playing the instrument for more
than 30 minutes through amps I could not afford.

So I have to tell you that the humble Gibson SG faded special that won
my heart in 2008 is still the Queen of my music room and it's ten years
later. I have other guitars that I play, but none can rival the Queen.
I named her Luna, she was my first SG, and every time I put her down
after playing, it's with the spoken or unspoken comment, "What a great
guitar."

That my friend, is priceless.

That's a beautiful guitar there!

You're right. I knew instantly. It was surreal, the whole night I thought and read up, etc. Played it again today.

For clarity sake, it's at the store I work at. I'm on the pro-audio side but spend time in the guitar section ogling things that come in. Always play the Gibsons, Fenders, PRS that arrive.
Im not a big LP fan, I do want a DC Junior in my life at some point.

My no.1 and only guitar now is an 8502 American Ash Tele, with a 36th Anniversary neck humbucker (messing around with bridge pups at the moment). Had it for 10 years.

But I think I could go deeper into expression and my head tone with this SG.

Gotta do it.

Well I am definitely biased but I think the 2018 SG HP models are still the best out there.

Before they changed to the 2018 HP2 models ( replacing rosewood with the synthetic material ). I don't have any strong feelings against the synthetic material fretboards but feel they won't hold value over time if resale is important.

I dunno what store you are at but GC has the 2018 SG HP models on clearance at 100 over the price of the 2019 SG standard models. The mojave fade 2018 SG HP is ( well not the color I have ) extremely bad ass.

I think the titanium zero fret is a big positive change. The robo tuners you can always ditch.

So there's nothing wrong with the 2019 SG standard but I would do a comparison to see. I like the 57 and 57+ pickups in the 2018 SG HP a little more than the 490R 490T combo the 2019 SG standard has also but shoot you can always change pickups.

I'm in South Africa, so it's a limited buffet of Gibson (will still.check around for interest sake).

I would lean more towards the 61 (sexy horns), or special (walnut mmm) rather than the HP, for my tastes.
I think I'm a batwing kinda guy though.

So far I like the 490's. They seem to be very dynamic and straight forward. I heard a smooth top end.
I don't hear many LP's I like apart from whatevers in the 57 LP custom, and the 36th Anni in my Tele.
That's a whole journey.

Nah, the 2019 SG Standard above, has the high neck tenon, and a batwing, so I'm gonna say it has a non- Standard '61 RI body style. It does have the rounded neck profile though.

Body ( Horns, bevel) is '61 Ri style and tenon is standard.

One thing everybody is overlooking for the new 2019 is the low frets. It makes a big difference in feel compared to medium jumbo frets on the 2017/2018 standards.

I think that is actually a big part of what I was liking. I didn't feel like the neck and frets were 'there'. I could just play. That's interesting. I am a medium jumbo or jumbo guy on Fenders.

It's been put aside for me, I'll be able to sort it out tomorrow.

Played it through a cranked AC30 today.
Just ridiculous.
Found the middle position chime tone people talk about.
