Hi Everybody,
My name is Bob, and I'm a relatively new convert to SGs. I really disliked them for a bunch of years because the only ones I ever played were a buddy's 70's SGs with the narrow nut, something I really dislike. I just always thought SGs weren't for me. Well, fast forward to early last year when I went into my favorite local haunt to buy strings and there was a '61 RI up on the wall. After years of walking past 'em, I decided to pull it down and try it out. It was simply the nicest guitar I had picked up in recent memory, and when I inquired about the price that was all she wrote. :Droolin:

I was hooked.

I'll probably pop over to the SG forum to post all the details, but the pic below shows my current three. The '61 RI, a 2005 SG Classic, and probably the single best sounding, guitar I've ever owned in 32 of playing, my '64 SG Jr.

Now to dig into the archives!

Welcome to ETSG! Great set of SGs. I have only one, but "she's my pride an joy... she's my sweet little lady, I'm her little lover boy..."

Lots of guys come to this forum for advice... you look like you could probably give some instead. I like the exchange of opinion and experience, which is mostly pretty civil. So tell us what it's like to play these three, and how they sound different from each other, and what the audience thinks.

Welcome to the forum and you get 2 bonus points for posting pics of your gear AND having more than one SG O0

Re your story about the SG... I can't tell you how many of my buddies have said they don't like SGs and then pick up my SG classic and change their minds about them. The weight and the tone and the feel are all just fantastic imho.

Hello and welcome to the forum, great bunch of lads on here, very friendly.

Excellent looking SGs too I love that Classic with P90s!

I only have 1 SG which I am starting to modify and it's my pride and joy of my collection, can't imagine ever parting company with it.

Cheers :)

Thanks all!

Col. Mustard,
While the '61 RI sold me on SGs, I'm finding that the '64 Jr get ALL of the playing time these days. It just has "it". I've always read about "old wood" and sure enough, I believe it now. Unamplified, it has a tone that unmatched by the others. So woody, with that unmistakeable mahogany mid-range knock. Strum it and it's so even and full. The neck is larger than what Gibson calls "sixties", but it isn't like the rounded profile either, it's flatter along the back than that. Very comfy. I wish the other two were like it. The P90 is hotter than the bridge pickup in my Classic, and measures in about 8.4k vs Classic's 7.6k bridge pickup. I posted this in the "Gibson SG" forum, but my band plays 60s-70s covers of anything from The Small Faces and Rory Gallagher to Kiss and old Judas Priest, and over two sets I kept expecting to swap out the Jr for one of the others, and never did.

I got the Classic as a backup for the Jr and to get that P90 neck tone. I think with something like a Wolftone "Meaner" bridge pickup and a slightly more underwound neck pup and it will be an even more killer guitar than it is already. I traded a SG Std for it, and when I was exchanging emails with the owner he kept saying, "It's a three piece body, but you just have to play it, you'll see.". He was right, too. The neck on it is the rounded profile, but it seems smaller than most I've tried in the past. Got to love that hand finishing.

The RI? I think the more I play the two with P90s the less it gets played, which is kind of sad because it's so nice. I've put some tasty upgrades into it, which made a great guitar even nicer, but the P90s have a tone I just really like. I can't believe I been playing guitar for over 30yrs and have never owned a good P90 equipped guitar, because now I'm finding humbuckers just too flat and compressed. That I love Strats as well probably has something to do with the fact I like a bigger single coil too. I think if I can find a good wraptail Special the RI will probably hit the old trading block. Then again, maybe I just need to try some different humbuckers. I probably should have at least one humbucker-equipped guitar around right?

The audience? Other than the guys in front with their arms crossed in front of them, I imagine most couldn't tell the difference between my SGs and my Strat. ;)

Welcome to the party. I see you brought stuff with you.:)
Those are nice, especially the Junior. I think Juniors have an uncluttered beauty both in looks and sound that none of the others can match and keep meaning to get one but haven't found one that likes me enough to come home with me yet. Gotta keep lookin'

Thanks all!

Love the grain on that Standard.

Suh-Weet!

:fingersx: While in the 60s it would have been a Standard, now it's a '61 Reissue, but I do agree that it's a particularly nice piece of mahogany.
